Hope Notes 11/08/23

November 8, 2023
Hello Hoper,
I saw something on social media this week meant for teaching your children how to pray.  After reading it, I thought how it really doesn’t apply just to children!  Sometimes we adults need a little help in the prayer department, too.  And yes, I know that Jesus gave us a guideline on how to pray in Matthew 6:9-13, but what I’m going to share below is also a HAND-y little method and visual reminder. I’ve edited it a bit in order to make it a little more ‘adult friendly:’
THUMB – finger closest to you! Pray for the people closest to you like your family and friends.
POINTER – used for giving direction! Pray for the people in your life who guide you like mentors, elders, teachers and trusted friends.
MIDDLE – tallest. Pray for the heads of your government and leaders of your church.
RING – the weakest finger. Pray for those in need, who are sick, or have no homes or families to love them.
PINKY – smallest finger is for yourself. Pray for your own prayer requests.
Whenever we find ourselves floundering for what to pray, we can take a glance at our hands and go down the list, finger by finger.  More importantly, we can remember that God has also sent us the Spirit who intercedes for us by giving us the words to say when we feel stuck. “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” (Romans 8:26)  And that Jesus intercedes for us in heaven. “Therefore he is able, once and forever, to save those who come to God through him. He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf.” (Hebrews 7:25) Amen and Amen!
With a prayerful heart…..LoisSPIRITUAL CARE

Our Relationship With Integrity
(Eph. 4:16; Matt. 5:33-37; Js. 1:22-25)

In our culture, it is understandable to say whatever you need to in order to get the results you want. Sometimes it means leaving out certain information to make sure that someone sees your point of view. Other times, it means actually being less than honest to protect yourself. From this mindset, the truth is less important than the results you desire.  Christians can find themselves following along in this pattern without realizing how contrary it is to following Jesus. Being in the world but not of the world means that we have a different relationship with integrity than others. We’re going to take a look at a few passages from Paul, Jesus, and James to see how important it is that we are trustworthy with what we say and how we live.WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDIES:
Join us at 6:30 for coffee & fellowship before heading into our classes at 7:00pm. There are programs for kids, teens, and adults.

  • “You Might Be A Pharisee If…” led by Dwight Lein: A Biblical look at biases and traditions in the local church and in each of us.
  • “Find Rest” led by Damon Briggs: Are you a tired Christian? Does your life seem like one endless rush after another? Jesus invited us to come to Him to find rest.  How can we do that when there’s so much to do?  In this study, we’ll explore together the Scriptures that teach us how we can step into the kind of rest we need.
  • “Leading at Hope” led by Pastor Mark: A discussion of some of our basic approaches to leadership for anyone who is serving in a leading role, or who wants to learn more about Biblical approaches to leadership.

If you’re volunteering on a Sunday morning, whether its greeting, HopeKids!, in the sound booth, etc., please join us for a team prayer huddle! We want to gather together everyone who is serving that morning to pray for the services. Meet at 8:40 in the GoZone!

Anyone can join us Sunday mornings at 8:30 in Pastor Mark’s office to pray for that morning’s services. Contact Bob Baumiester for more information (rbaumiester@gmail.com).

For the month of October, we averaged $9910 per week which brings our annual average down to $10,029. These both remain above our 2023 weekly giving target of $9655. We are praying for the Lord to continue to move in the growth of our giving as we head into the final two months of this year. We have a new location search on the horizon and continue to see new growth and visiting families each week, so please pray with us for the Lord to provide financially for all of our needs!OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD: Due back this Sunday!
Here’s how to make this easy & fun: CHOOSE a boy or girl and the age category. FILL WITH a quality ‘wow’ item, then add other fun toys, hygiene items, and school supplies. PRAY for the child who will receive your gifts; you can include a personal note & photo. If you’d like, you can donate your $10 per box shipping online and receive a tracking label to discover the destination of your shoebox. Also a little reminder please do not tape the boxes shut. We have rubber bands at the back table where the boxes are being returned too.

If you are new to Hope within the past few months, our staff and elders would love to get to know you and your family more! Join us in between services on Sunday, November 12th for coffee & some sweets. Stop by the GoZone 2 classroom anytime between 9:45-10:45!

Each year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, SOH has the privilege of serving families who have an incarcerated loved one, and some local families in need, by providing them with all that they need to have a complete Thanksgiving dinner. You can be a part of providing over 100 families with a Thanksgiving meal. To find out how you can help, click here.

Our pantry shelves are looking a little bare! Help us stock them full before we head into the holiday season. We are currently looking for: cereal, spaghetti sauce, peanut butter and jelly. All donations can be placed in the kitchen.

What’s better than a hot coffee, warm cup of cocoa, holiday treats, and live music? We can’t think of a better way to finish out the month of giving thanks and gear up toward the season of celebration! Come on out and enjoy our first ever “Coffee House” right here at Hope on Wednesday, November 29th at 7:00 – 8:00pm. The evening will be filled with the sounds of the season – select live performances by some of the musicians here at Hope – and refreshments for the whole family. There is no childcare provided, but the nurseries will be open for anyone who needs to use them.

SUNDAY NIGHT SERIES: How To Read The Bible for Dummies
How do you even use the Bible? It’s big, it looks weird, and it’s written by folks who are long dead and lived far away. How can this be useful in your day to day life, let alone the guiding light? These and many other questions are precisely what our new series seeks to address! By learning reading techniques, basics of interpretation, and helpful habits the Bible will go from a dusty book on your shelf to a vital part of your daily life.

Dress up and pig out with us for this special Youth Group as we celebrate Thanksgiving with our fancy dress night! Don your Sunday best and compete for prizes in fun fall games! Dinner starts at 6pm so don’t be late! We’ll also be diving into the theme of gratefulness as we enter the season of thanksgiving. Bring a friend, and don’t miss out!

We’re diving deep into the Word on Wednesday Nights! Join us for some fun and some focus as we crack open the book of Psalms and see what awesome truths we can learn! Taking it one chapter at a time, we’ll learn about these ancient poems and see just how they speak to us today! It’s also a great opportunity to group with friends, pray for each other, and grow closer to God. Hope to see you there!

HopeKids! Hangout is back for all kids in K-5th grades, and we’re starting a new series called Jesus Lives, Follow Him Boldly. This fall we will be talking about why we put our faith in a LIVING savior, and what living out that faith means for anyone who believes, no matter how young or old. Join us for those conversations + exciting games, fun activities, and, of course, snacks! Hope to see you there from 6:00-8:00!

None of our HopeKids! will want to miss our Wednesday night programs this Fall! We’ll be digging into Bible stories about harmony and integrity, looking at different verses of the Bible each week, and pairing our elementary and pre-K kids together to enrich the experience through crafts, games, and partnership. You don’t want your kids to miss out on these fun-filled nights; engaging their faith and learning more from God’s Word!
