Hope Notes 08/11/2021

August 11, 2021

Hello Hoper~
Because we’re all friends, I’m going to share an embarrassing story with you.  One rainy day, my hubby and I went out to eat.  We got out of the car and made a run for it.  Except….I couldn’t figure out why he wasn’t waiting for me.  Regardless of the weather, he always waited to take my hand as we went.  I careened after him shouting ‘wait for me, wait for me’, all the while lunging and grabbing at his jacket.  We finally got to the entrance and…….you guessed it…..it WASN’T HIM. This poor man looked at me like the lunatic I was.  Where was Michael?  Still in the car, having the best laugh ever.  Unbeknownst to me, he’d paused to blow his nose. And I didn’t really notice the imposter’s jacket since I had my head down due to the rain. I haven’t lived that one down to this day!
Have you ever chased after the wrong thing, or the wrong person?  Something or someone that God did not intend for you?  It could be a job, a ministry choice, or a relationship.  Sometimes it can be hard to discern whether what we are chasing is what WE want, or what GOD wants.  If it’s not something God would have for us, I can guarantee it’s pretty much meaningless.  The author of Ecclesiastes refers to this as ‘chasing after the wind’. “Yet when I considered all the works that my hands had accomplished and what I had toiled to achieve, I found everything to be futile, a chasing of the wind; there was nothing to be gained under the sun.” (Ecclesiastes 2:11)  So how do we know if what we’re chasing is what God wants?  Ask Him!  “Show me the right path, O LORD; point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you” (Psalm 25:4-5). God does not intend for us to stumble blindly through life, wondering where we’re going and what we’re doing.  He often will lovingly put up roadblocks or close doors to guide us.  I love the reassurance that is found in Isaiah 30:21 – “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”  Our God is so gracious to offer His guidance in these ways.  Now if only His voice would have shouted to me on that rainy day, “That is not your husband!”

Do Good (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 6:9-10) – Hoper Highlights
The problems of the world are easy to see. We walk through life constantly noticing how things are not what they should be. As Christians, we want the world to know Jesus and for good to triumph. But it can feel overwhelming and hopeless. What are we supposed to do about that? The actual answer is probably a lot simpler than it seems. We are to be people who do good. Look around your life and notice the chances you have to make a difference by doing something that is good. The act itself may be small, but the results are big. We have some Hopers who are actively involved in local ministry in Woodbury who can share with us how God is using them to do exactly that. Maybe we can join them in the good they are doing. Or maybe the Lord will use their experience to stir you up to the good He wants you to do.

Romans 8:14-15

“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.”

What does it mean for you to be a son or daughter of God? Think through the implications and give thanks to God for your adoption into his family.
