Hope Notes 10/23/2019

October 23, 2019

When our daughter Emily was little, she went through a phase of being deathly afraid of ‘murderlers’.  I think it was some psychotic combination of a murderer and a burglar; the two scariest things she could think of to combine.  (Side note – to this day we still refer to murderlers in relation to something really scary!)  When I was little I was terrified of the wolverine that appeared at my bedroom window at night.  Mind you, my window was on the second floor, but that did not matter.  That wolverine managed to try and get in night after night!  Children’s fears are often unrealistic and unfounded, but very real to them.  As adults, we too have fears.  Some are groundless; some are based on reality and quite warranted.  No matter what type of fears we have, we all want to be reassured and comforted.  Our heavenly Father is our greatest source for this. “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)  I don’t have to battle my fears alone; I can turn to my loving Father who calls me by name and promises to never leave me. Knowing that God will uphold me no matter what helps to alleviate any fear of the unknown.  How about Isaiah 43:1 – “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine!”  Those are some pretty comforting promises, are they not?  And we know our God always keeps His promises.  So cling to them in blessed assurance.  I also like this short and simple verse found in John 4:18 – “Perfect love casts out fear.”  We belong to a heavenly Father who lavishes His love on us and who cares deeply about every single thing in our lives.  He is all powerful and all knowing.  I know if I can focus on these things, my fear will give way to faith.  So, when those ‘murderlers’ are at the door or the wolverine is at the window, I will call these promises out from my heart and say, “When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.”  (Psalm 56:3)

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE – Failing at Your Purpose (Exodus 2:11-24)
We know that our Creator made us with a purpose in mind. While many try to reject this idea, the language of our world reflects it regularly.  We hear that we are to ‘follow our heart’ and ‘find our passion’.  We are supposed to ‘do what we were made to do’. Disconnecting these ideas from a purposeful Creator doesn’t make a lot of sense.  But even when we understand the concept that we have a purpose in this life, we can make choices and take paths that seem to destroy the possibility of fulfilling that purpose.  Many people have indeed rejected the potential and calling of their lives. But what happens when you’ve messed up really bad, and then you want to find redemption?  Is that even possible?  How much do our mistakes downgrade the potential of our lives?  The story of Moses actually begins with this very string of events.  He was made for a purpose, but he blew it. As we look at this story in our study through Exodus, we’ll see that God is able to do more with our mistakes than we ever imagined.

Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with.  Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org and on YouTube “Hope Christian Fellowship”.

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up!  “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)  PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday.  So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the 1st & 2nd Grade classroom to pray together for God’s power in each of us.  We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!

Join us for our study in the book of Ephesians.  This book is a beautiful revelation of the Church and the spiritual blessings we have in Christ Jesus. Paul explains the mystery of the church and gives practical insight into living as believers.

“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.”

Each month we’ll focus on one of our church goals for 2019 and have a weekly challenge to help us achieve it!   Let’s ask the Lord to work through us this year!
