Hope Notes 10/02/2019

October 2, 2019

Words scroll through my brain like a ticker tape; things others have said, things I’ve said. Words from conversations long past will sometimes appear.  And these are just the words that have actually been spoken, either by me or to me.  I’m pretty sure we all have them!  But how about the words you’ve never spoken, or the words you’ve said to someone that you wish you hadn’t?  I am often haunted by words that filled my thoughts but remained unspoken. An opportunity missed to encourage someone, to tell someone the Truth about salvation, or maybe to speak the Truth in love while holding someone accountable.  1Thessalonians 5:14 is pretty clear about what we should be doing: “And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.”  Hebrews 10:25 also gives us this counsel:  “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” So I hate it when I don’t follow these instructions!  And then I replay the words I should have said over and over in my head.  On the flips side of that, how about when you realize you’ve said something you shouldn’t?  We’ve all done that.  Sometimes it’s an honest mistake or miscommunication.  Other times it can be a deliberate sling of an arrow.  It can be pretty hard to hold back, especially in the heat of a disagreement.  However, we ought to consider ourselves properly warned.  “…..no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.” (James 3:8)  We need to do our best to keep a tight rein on that powerful weapon and make sure we are using it for good, not evil.  We have also been told in Scripture how we are to use our words. “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” (Ephesians 4:29)  I think I could speak for all of us in saying that we don’t want to be haunted by either type of these word ghosts.  If we can remember the guidelines we’ve been given in Scripture and act accordingly, then we might actually find ourselves fulfilling 1 Peter 3:10: “If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days, keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies.”

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE – Living in a Hard Land (Exodus 1)
Church can be a place where people pretend that everything is fine.  We can imagine it as a place where we need to hide the hardships and struggles of life.  We look around and think that everyone else has a relatively smooth life and that it is easy for them to worship Jesus.  But if we get past the assumptions and shallow way of thinking about others, we realize that life is probably hard for all of us. And those struggles that each of us face can bring up deep questions about God and about hope.  We’re beginning a study in the book of Exodus today, and we’re going to see how God meets us in the hard places. As the book opens, God’s people are facing undeserved suffering.  Since many of us face the same situation, let’s see what we can learn from the experience of the children of Israel.

Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with.  Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org and on YouTube “Hope Christian Fellowship”.

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up!  “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)  PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday.  So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the 1st & 2nd Grade classroom to pray together for God’s power in each of us.  We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!

Join us for our study in the book of Ephesians.  This book is a beautiful revelation of the Church and the spiritual blessings we have in Christ Jesus. Paul explains the mystery of the church and gives practical insight into living as believers.

“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.”

Each month we’ll focus on one of our church goals for 2019 and have a weekly challenge to help us achieve it!   Let’s ask the Lord to work through us this year!

Go Zone is our Sunday Morning kid’s service, planned especially for K-5th graders. Our goal is to encourage the kids to live with their focus on “GOing for GOD, GOing for GROWTH, and GOing FOREVER!” This service includes worship, games, and exploring important biblical truths in fun and creative ways before heading off to Sunday school. Follow HopeKids! Ministries on Facebook at: facebook.com/HCFHopeKid

Great news for our GoZone! Thanks to the willing hearts of many of you, we now have enough volunteers to expand the GoZone to include any children who are currently in kindergarten and feel ready to join starting October 13th! This, of course, is up to the parents’ discretion. If you would like your child to remain in the Fours & Fives class until the start of the new year, that’s no problem at all. We’re thankful that God provided a way for us to include more kids in the GoZone sooner, and we look forward to seeing you October 13th!
