Hope Notes 05/29/2019

May 29, 2019

Dear Hope Friends,

Pastor Mark’s message series on Worship has really got me thinking! I’ve long had a problem with the secular world (and sadly some believers as well) who spend time worshiping the creation rather than the Creator. I suppose it goes back to the ancient days when people worshiped the sun god, the moon god, the god of the harvest, etc. They wanted to give thanks and praise for the things provided by those ‘gods’. Good intentions, but wrong target. It’s quite clear in Scripture that we are to worship God alone; not man, not angels, not created objects. Oh and one more kicker – we are not to receive worship ourselves but make sure to give the glory to God. Want to read a scary example of this? Acts 12:23 offers this dire illustration: “Instantly, an angel of the Lord struck Herod with a sickness, because he accepted the people’s worship instead of giving the glory to God. So he was consumed with worms and died.” Ummm, I think that’s enough to keep me from hogging all the praise for myself! Now let’s look at some of the other examples. We are to honor men according to the degree of honor they deserve, but worship God alone. Peter experienced this when he went to visit Cornelius, and tried to set Cornelius straight. “The following day he arrived in Caesarea, where Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends. As Peter was about to enter, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet to worship him. But Peter helped him up. “Stand up,” he said, “I am only a man myself.” (Acts 10:24-26) It saddens me to see people ascribe so much power and praise to angels. They are missing the mark. John is told explicitly not to worship the angels (by an angel himself!) in Revelation 19:10. “When John the beloved received those awesome visions recorded in the book of Revelation, by the hands of an angel, he fell down at his feet to worship the angel. Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said, “No, don’t worship me. I am a servant of God, just like you and your brothers and sisters who testify about their faith in Jesus. Worship only God.”And finally, probably the most familiar passage in Scripture about man made images is found in Exodus 20:4 -“You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.” The emphasis is again on the fact that we need to worship God Himself.
“Give to the LORD the glory he deserves! Bring your offering and come into his presence. Worship the LORD in all his holy splendor.” (1 Chronicles 16:29)

Why We Worship – A series on the depth behind our singing together in church.
Each week we get together as a church and sing. In fact, churches all around the world get together every Sunday and do the same thing. But do you know why this is virtually a universal part of church? We even see worship singing in heaven! Why is this such a big deal? And what do you miss when you don’t show up? In the next few weeks, we’ll see how much worship means and why it is an indispensable part of your Christian life. Hopefully, when we’re through, we’ll all value showing up at church to worship together more than ever before.

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE – To Give God Glory (Genesis 8:20-21 / Psalm 100 / Psalm 103)
The Olympics have a unique tradition: after the winner and the runners up are decided for an event, the champions are honored by standing on a pedestal to receive their medals, and having the winner’s national anthem played. This idea goes way back to the ancient games, almost 800 years before Jesus was born, when victors were given an olive wreath to wear on their heads so all would know that they stood as champion of the competition. Recognizing the achievements of the victorious seemed fitting through the ages. As believers, we serve someone who is worthy of all honor. Our worship is the wreath we give Him over and over again. We worship because He is worthy of it. And because it brings joy, both to God and to us! You will never run out of reasons to worship God. As God’s people, we need to value the opportunity we have to tell of all His victories and goodness over and over again.

Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org.
SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 in Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday. So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the 1st & 2nd Grade classroom to pray together for God’s power in each of us. We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!

Shout for joy to the Lord all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs

Each month we’ll focus on one of our church goals for 2019 and have a weekly challenge to help us achieve it! Let’s ask the Lord to work through us this year!
Who can you invite out to Hope?

Come join us for this study on the book of Ephesians. It’s a good mid-week boost for our spiritual growth. If you are unable to make it out, you can watch our live stream on Facebook!
Please Note: While our regular Bible study is on hiatus during the month of June, we are offering the following Workshop Wednesday classes. Take some time to peruse the topics and then sign up for one of the classes on the sheets provided in the lobby.

Grief: God’s Help in Times of Sorrow Meets in the Toddler Room
Led by Nancy Reeves
This study will help one in the difficult journey of grieving a loss, whether it’s the loss of a loved one, a marriage, a job or a home. Each study is dedicated to an emotion common to the grieving process: denial, fear, anger, guilt, sadness, hope, faith, acceptance and praise. The Psalm for each lesson deals with the same emotion and helps us understand God’s role and power in our healing.

The Art of Neighboring Meets in the Preschool Room
Led by Dave Hallahan
When Jesus was asked to sum up everything into one command, he said to love God with everything we have and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Most of us have turned this simple idea of loving our neighbors into a nice saying, but going on with our lives without actually putting it into practice. What would happen if every follower of Jesus took the Great Commandment literally? Is it possible that the solution to our society’s biggest issues has been right under our noses for the past two thousand years?

“Overcomer” by David Jeremiah Meets in the 3rd-5th Grade Room
Led by Mike Hartwell
In John 16:33 Jesus says, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” How do we respond to the troubles of this world? We can either concede defeat or live in the victory God has promised. In Overcomer, Dr. Jeremiah uses Ephesians 6 to lay out a pathway for spiritual victory. He shows us eight ways to live a life of unstoppable strength, unmovable faith, and unbelievable power.

Hearing God Speak Through Nature Meets in the 1st-2nd Grade Room
Led by Deb McCarson
We know that the heavens declare the glory of God, and we see His attributes every day through His creation. In this workshop, we will investigate scripture that shows it is God’s intention to speak to us specifically through His creation. Using prompts from nature, we will participate in activities that encourage reflection and allow us to practice hearing God’s voice in a very personal way.

“When the Enemy Strikes” by Charles Stanley Meets in the Youth Room
Led by Ryan Winstel
Fear, discouragement, loneliness, anger and temptation are human struggles we all endure at some point in our life. Sometimes these can come from an enemy that we can not defeat on our own. But thankfully, God has provided us a way to win this battle through reliance on Him and protection through His strength and His Word. Let’s seek out Scripture and how it reveals our responses to these threats.
