Hope Notes 12/5/18

December 5, 2018

Hi Hopers,

It’s Emily here! I’m filling in for my mom, Lois, while she’s away. I was looking at my December calendar the other day; writing in exciting Christmas events with family, friends, and at church. I wish I could say that I sat with a smile on my face and gazed at all of the filled-in blocks with joy and anticipation, but here’s my confession: I started to cry! In that moment I wanted nothing more than to set my calendar on fire and run away until Christmas morning. Maybe you can relate? That’s when I was reminded of a quote I had read earlier in the day from Ann Voskamp. She says to choose: “Simple over stress, wonder over worry, holy over hype, the greatest gift, over all other gifts.” In that moment I felt the Holy Spirit whispering to me, “Don’t let Satan rob you of the wonder, the reverence, or the anticipation of the greatest gift.” The reason my calendar is filled with exciting events is because we have much to be excited about! Our Savior has come – and He’s coming again! The anticipation of Christmas is a reminder of the anticipation of His second coming. The celebration of Christmas is the celebration that God sent us a savior so that we could have eternal life! And what a privilege it is to be able to celebrate our Savior with family, friends, and our church family.

SUNDAY MORNINGS
SERMON ON THE MOUNT SERIES
The greatest sermon ever preached still has unbelievable power to change us. Jesus spoke these words about 2000 years ago to a large audience on a hillside, but He meant them to challenge us as well. The thoughts upend normal thinking on almost every spiritual front, and if we want to follow Jesus, much of what He represents starts here!

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE – Payback (Matthew 5:38-47)
When someone damages you in any significant way, it not only causes you suffering, it also can make you feel powerless. The natural anger or sadness that comes from loss joins together with a desire to regain control of your life. So often, we think through ways to get revenge. It may not bring back what we’ve lost, but it will definitely give us the sense that we’re back on top. Jesus, our King, has a different approach. He starts by talking about the law and how it requires justice. But then Jesus says that we are to forgo payback. Instead, He asks us to do the unthinkable. How can we live out what Jesus says? Let’s take the morning and explore this together
MESSAGES AVAILABLE
Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 in Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday. So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the Youth Room to pray together for God’s power in each of us. We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!
