Hope Notes 11/21/18

November 21, 2018

Dear Friends of Hope,

Have you ever been in a place of brokenness or grief so deep that it seemed like you would never be able to climb out of it? I know I have. And I’m here to tell you this – on your own you CAN’T climb out of it. But I’ll bet you already know that. It’s times like those when we need the hand of our Almighty Father more than anything. He reaches down to us in the blackest of nights, and suddenly something inside seems to shift, allowing the tiniest shard of light to appear. Hope. The promise of peace. His peace. We cling to it with all our might, daring to believe just a little, that our hearts will be whole once again. “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18) Do you see that? When our spirits are crushed beyond what we think is repairable. When our hearts are so broken that we don’t believe anything could put them back together. He can. He will. He does. But we need to do our part. We need to call to Him in prayer and then wait patiently, expectantly. Rest in Him. “Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.” (Psalm 62:5) We need to trust that He will, in His perfect timing, speak His Word over our storm and all will be calm. In the meantime we wait. We trust, knowing He is with us. “Surely the righteous will never be shaken; they will be remembered forever. They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the LORD.” (Psalm 112:6-7) I am speaking from personal experience when I say I can promise you that doing these things will bring you to place of hope and peace as you ‘wait upon the Lord’. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13)

The greatest sermon ever preached still has unbelievable power to change us. Jesus spoke these words about 2000 years ago to a large audience on a hillside, but He meant them to challenge us as well. The thoughts upend normal thinking on almost every spiritual front, and if we want to follow Jesus, much of what He represents starts here!

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE – Living Up To Your Word (Matthew 5:31-37)
Some people can’t be believed. Maybe you have someone like this in your life: they have made promises or told stories that later turned out to be empty words or inflated truths. It is a struggle to be connected to someone you can’t believe in any kind of deep relationship. You’re always guessing what is actually true and what is just said for effect. Jesus talks about how our words should carry truth. Whether we are talking about a vow made in marriage, or just a promise made to someone else, people should absolutely be able to trust our words. Without this character trait, how are we supposed to represent the King? How are we supposed to share the hope we have in Jesus? Yet, too often, we don’t stop to consider how reliable our words are. So let’s take a look at what Jesus has to teach us on this topic.
Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 in Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday. So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the Youth Room to pray together for God’s power in each of us. We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!

“The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”

Unable to make it out for Wednesday nights? We are LIVE STREAMING our Thinking Out Loud series on Facebook! Watch and interact from your phone or computer live! We’ll also continue to post videos of the night to our YouTube channel, so you can catch up at anytime. Or, listen to our Podcast on iTunes.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be looking at topics where those who do not have experience can gain from those who do. So, if you have any experience with the upcoming topics (Depression, Racism, etc) we’d love to have you come out and share with us so that we can all learn more and be better prepared to engage with one another.
PLEASE NOTE: There are no Wednesday evening activities for November 21st.
