Hope Notes 11/7/18

November 7, 2018

Dear Friends of Hope,

I was reading in Mark 10 about when Jesus healed Bartimaeus of his blindness. (Fun Fact: This is the only place in Scripture where the name of the person being healed is mentioned!) Anyway, I got to vs 50 where the people call out to Bartimaeus and tell him to go to Jesus. “Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.” The mental picture of him throwing aside his cloak might make you think of how quickly he wanted to get to Jesus. I mean, he probably RAN to Him at the thought of being healed! He wanted to get to His Savior as quickly as possible with nothing to hinder him. But let’s go a step further. Deeper. That cloak was probably his most prized possession; I’m sure he didn’t own much. And yet he threw it aside. Cast it off. Without hesitation. It seems to me that would be a good representation of his faith and trust in Jesus. So what about me? Do I have that kind of heart? What am I holding onto rather than Jesus? One thing that comes immediately to mind would be relationships, both family and friends. I often turn towards those closest to me rather than going straight to the Source when seeking answers, looking for comfort, or sharing a blessing. They are so precious to me; I cherish every moment that I get to spend with them. But I am convicted by Bartimaeus’ example to be sure not to allow those relationships to hinder my relationship with our Lord. As for any other stumbling blocks……….I’m not much for clinging to possessions, but I do find myself wanting to grasp onto safety, security, and contentment. How ironic, when these things are all so fleeting and should be held loosely in our hands. We need to throw aside whatever ‘cloaks’ we’re holding onto and hold tight to Jesus with all we’ve got for He has all we need!

SUNDAY MORNINGS
SERMON ON THE MOUNT SERIES
The greatest sermon ever preached still has unbelievable power to change us. Jesus spoke these words about 2000 years ago to a large audience on a hillside, but He meant them to challenge us as well. The thoughts upend normal thinking on almost every spiritual front, and if we want to follow Jesus, much of what He represents starts here!
SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE – We Are Hope
We’re going to set aside this morning from our study in the Sermon on the Mount to talk together as a church family. We want to sync up on who we are and where we’re headed. In order for us to function well as a body, we all need to understand what God has called us to and how we approach the work He’s given us. So today, we’ll dig into some of the keys to our ministry and put our hearts and minds together. What if our church was led and empowered by the Holy Spirit? What if we absolutely let Him be in charge and be the energy behind all that we do? We believe that this is the Lord’s invitation to us and we’re going to talk about how we can turn towards this by looking at a few Scriptures and by having an open conversation about what’s coming.
MESSAGES AVAILABLE
Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 in Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday. So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the Youth Room to pray together for God’s power in each of us. We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH
NOVEMBER CHALLENGE VERSE – Proverbs 12:18
“The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”

FACEBOOK LIVE!
Unable to make it out for Wednesday nights? We are LIVE STREAMING our Thinking Out Loud series on Facebook! Watch and interact from your phone or computer live! We’ll also continue to post videos of the night to our YouTube channel, so you can catch up at anytime. Or, listen to our Podcast on iTunes.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY @ 7:00 – 8:15 pm
FALL BIBLE STUDY – ‘THINKING OUT LOUD SERIES”
Over the next few weeks we’ll be looking at topics where those who do not have experience can gain from those who do. So, if you have any experience with the upcoming topics (Depression, Racism, etc) we’d love to have you come out and share with us so that we can all learn more and be better prepared to engage with one another.
11/7 – A Patriarchy Problem?: Addressing Male Headship
In today’s world, the idea that men should lead or be in charge is thought to be the root of many of our culture’s problems. There is a conversation that much of the sexual harassment and abuse at the core of the #MeToo movement has grown out of a patriarch-based society. But the Bible talks about a man being the head of his wife and home. What does this mean, and has this indeed been a misguided way of structuring our lives? How does this apply to women in leadership in secular roles? How does it apply to the partnership between husband and wife in the home? We’ll dig into 1 Corinthians 11 and 14, 1 Timothy 2, and Ephesians 5 to see what Paul means in each of these passage. And we’ll ask ourselves what Genesis 1:27 and Galatians 3:28 have to say about this. We’ll also add in the fact that the first witnesses of Jesus’ resurrection are women. Putting all of this together and many other themes in Scripture should help us learn what ‘headship’ of man means and what it should look like in our homes, churches, and lives today.

UPCOMING TOPICS
11/14 – Unanswered Questions
We’ve covered a wide range of topics throughout this series – LGBTQ, Politics, #MeToo, Racism, and more – but perhaps you’ve had questions we haven’t addressed. We’ll be spending our final Thinking Out Loud trying to answer those questions. So, if you have anything on your mind – digging deeper into one of the topics we’ve covered or concerning a topic we haven’t touched on at all – submit them on the Facebook Event page or to dmhallahan5@gmail.com
