Hope Notes 5/16/18

May 16, 2018

Dear Friends of Hope,

Wandering through the Craft Fair last Saturday, I was struck by how many talented people we have here at Hope! Beautiful artwork, delicious baked goods, intricate woodworking, and all sorts of knitted goods, crocheted pieces, and handiwork! Side Note: Did you know crafting is mentioned in the Bible? In Exodus 31:1-5 the Lord tells Moses about how He filled Bezalel “with all kinds of skills— to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of crafts.” Okay, back to my main topic! I thought about all the other talents we see on a regular basis at church – musicians, singers, organizers, teachers, workers, leaders, servers, prayer warriors………..I could go on and on. Surprised to see some of those listed as talent? Well, a talent is something that you are instinctually born with that gives you unique skills and abilities. Talent is different from knowledge in that it is not a learned behavior, although it can be enhanced through practice. The Bible tells us that we are all born with distinct talents and gifts that set us apart from each other. God is the giver of all our abilities. “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us……” (Romans 12:6) Your talent can be anything from musical ability to artistic ability, or simply your teaching skills, compassion, encouragement, communication skills – anything you’re naturally good at. But with those talents come responsibility. “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” (1Peter 4:10) When you discover the talents that God has given you and you use them to glorify Him, you will experience a life that feels full and rich. I think it’s safe to say the people of Hope are definitely headed down that path!

SUNDAY MORNINGS
SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE – Sing! (Psalm 33)
Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote a short sonnet titled “How Do I Love Thee” which has been famously quoted many times. She is trying to capture the heart that overflows with love for someone. The words that she finds don’t seem to be quite enough, no matter how big they are. And the love she’s expressing is all-encompassing: from youth to old age, from joys to sorrows. While we can understand this concept in romantic love or infatuation, we often do not associate it with our worship. Yet David gushes about God in this psalm. His love and praise seem to search for descriptions big enough to capture what he is thinking and feeling. But if you had to sum up his point, it could probably be done with one word: sing. We are invited to sing and make music to our Lord for more reasons than we can count. This song is destined to be one of joy and gratitude. But before we find our way to hearts that are full, we have to be ready to use music with everything we have to express our love for our Lord!

MESSAGES AVAILABLE
Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 in Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday. So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the Youth Room to pray together for God’s power in each of us. We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH

WORKSHOP WEDNESDAYS – COMING IN JUNE!
We’ll be taking a break from our regular bible study in the month of June and having Workshop Wednesdays. There are six classes to choose from. Check them out below and sign-up in the lobby!

WEDNESDAY CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
CHICK & BUNNY DOUGHERTY – GROWING THROUGH LIFE’S CHALLENGES
God never promised to exempt Christians from common human experiences such as rejection, loss, depression, doubts, injustices, etc. In this workshop we’ll read about several characters in the bible that faced the same challenges we do today. They we’ll take a look at Psalm 116 and learn about God’s repeated assurance: “I hear you. I am with you.” Life’s challenges can strengthen our faith if we allow the biblical examples God gave us to show us how.

MIKE HARTWELL – KNOW WHAT YOU BELIEVE
Are you a long time believer but feel like you still aren’t fully rooted when it comes to the ins and outs of Christianity? In this class we’ll be taking a look at Paul Little’s book to discover the core beliefs we as Christians should be able to understand and share with others. We’ll discuss things like angels and demons, what place the bible and church should have in our lives, and God as the trinity.

DEB MCCARSON – REDISCOVERING PURPOSE: INVESTING THE BURIED TALENT
At times we lose sight of our purpose. This may happen during times of transition, soul-searching, or after traumatic experiences. Perhaps we just aren’t sure how God wants to use us. Jesus taught us we are not to “hide our light under a bushel,” yet at times we might feel like we can not shine as brightly as we should. We’ll be exploring what our purpose is and what God requires of us through a series of expressive writing prompts and bible study. Through this we will attempt to free ourselves from the things that hold us back from knowing our true purpose.

DANA OTT – HOLY ROAR: THE PRACTICE OF PRAISE & WORSHIP
When is the last time you sensed the presence of God in your worship? Whether alone with Him in a quiet space or in
corporate worship with the family of God? Maybe it’s time for a fresh perspective and an opportunity to deepen your practice of praise! We’ll dig into Darren Whitehead’s book and uncover the transformational language of worship and praise to God!

MARK OTT – THE BASICS OF CHRISTIANITY
Are you just starting out your journey with Jesus? This workshop will take you from those very first steps through what the bible has to say on some of the main topics of Christianity. You’ll see it for yourself and feel like you know these things firsthand. Also, if you’re a believer who would be interested in using this study to share your faith with others, come out and join us through this series.

RYAN WINSTEL- KNOWING GOD’S WILL (A continued study)
Ever wonder if you are following God’s plan for your life or not? God wants you to know what His will is for you. Join us as we
continue to dive into what God’s word says about what it takes for us to align ourselves with God’s will for our lives. If you missed the workshop last year, don’t worry. There will be a review and notes for you to take home to catch up.
