Hope Notes 02/07/2024

February 7, 2024
Hello Hoper,
Rabbi Hyman Schachtel is credited as saying, “Happiness not having what we want but wanting what we have.”  I’ve often thought about that phrase over the years and, until recently, always applied it to material possessions.  Things like yearning for more stuff, or ‘junk’ in order to be happy. By the way, junk is stuff we could technically live without and stuff is junk that we think we need! This type of thinking falls right in line with Luke 12:15 where Jesus says, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” I thought I was doing pretty well in being content with the things I have. Then the Spirit spoke to me and said that it not only applies to material acquisitions, but to life situations, circumstances, talents, abilities, etc. This really struck a chord with me!  Listen to what Paul said in 2 Corinthians 12:10 ESV – “For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities.” Am I? Are we? Obviously, these things in and of themselves do not equate with happiness, but the act of being content with them showing up in our lives will allow us to be happy with life in general.  Paul reminds us again in Philippians 4:11 – “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.”  Imagine the peace and joy we would experience if we, too, could be content no matter what we have thrown at us or even taken from us!  Constantly desiring what we don’t have is a sure recipe for an unhappy heart.  Of course, we know that true joy is a gift from God, one of the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22).  I am simply focusing on the wording of Rabbi Schachtel’s adage. Now that I am convicted of a deeper application of this precept, I will be sure to check myself when those feelings of discontent creep in!
Desiring joy not junk….Lois

SPIRITUAL CARE

We Are Restorers | Communion
(2 Cor 1:23-2:11)

Time has a way of destroying things we hold dear. Pictures fade. Favorite songs are left un-played and unheard. Our first car is long gone. Even our bodies – after a certain age – start to deteriorate. One of the most precious gifts we ever hold is someone we love. Relationships are not immune to the damage of time and the reality of human fallibility. We make mistakes and those mistakes hurt the ones we love. What do Christians do about this? Paul is talking to his children in the faith in Corinth. He is discussing their complaint that he didn’t come when he said he would. Now, as he explains, he gives a description of the inner workings of a relationship in Christ that works toward restoration. There is an enemy that works against this, and our pain in relationship can often make it feel impossible.  But in Christ, forgiveness is normal and restoration is done through the power of Christ.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

GIVING REPORT:
For the month of January, we averaged $10,963 per week which is more than our target of $9950. This is wonderful news and the beginning of provision for Hope as we start to look for a new home with more space. Let’s make sure we’re each following the Lord faithfully in sacrifice and generosity as we financially support our church together. And let’s pray that these financial resources will be used under the Lord’s direction for His purposes in our church.

Baptism is an important symbolic opportunity to declare your testimony, and decision to follow Christ, in front of the church body! We’d love you to participate if this is something you’ve yet to do in your journey of faith. To participate, you’ll need to attend two classes – Wednesdays March 6th & 13th at 7:00. Sign-up at the front of the auditorium now! Any questions can be directed to Pastor Mark.

To celebrate 25 years of ministry, they are hosting a gala on March 3rd from 5:00-9:00 at the Camden County Boathouse in Collingswood, with all proceeds benefitting the organization. There will be a auction at the event, as well as an opportunity to sponsor. They are also seeking to get 2500 donations of $25! OWNING YOUR FAITH:
In a contentious age of conflicting opinions and snappy arguments it can be difficult to know what you believe, but as you grow and enter adulthood it becomes more and more evident that, whether it is strong or not, your faith is your own, and no one else’s. In this series Hope Youth will look throughout the narrative of the Bible and see how God’s people have owned their faith throughout history and what exactly they had faith in. Through this teens will see and learn the power of ownership, in their work, relationships, and faith.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY:
On Wednesday nights Hope Youth jumps feet first into the Word of God and practices prayer and Biblical study. We are going chapter by chapter through the book of Psalms and hone the key skills of Bible study that will help teens read on their own for the rest of their lives! It’s a great opportunity to connect through the Word with fellow teens, recharge in the middle of the week, and grow as a believer!

SUNDAY MORNING PROGRAMS:
We offer childcare and classes from our littlest Hopers to our 5th graders every Sunday morning at both services. Each classroom is staffed with friendly, enthusiastic, background-checked team members to ensure your child’s safety. Our WonderZone! serves our youngest children from infants through Pre-K, who are full of wonder about who God is!  K-5th graders gather in the GoZone! where we GO for God, GO for growth and GO forever.

HOPEKIDS! HANGOUT: Sundays from 6:00-8:00p
Come to HopeKids! Hangout for games, snacks, and Bible study! We’re digging deep into the Bible with our new series, “The Heart of God.” Each week we will be reading different passages from Scripture on a quest to learn more about the character and nature of our Creator, and reinforcing those lessons with activities and games to go along with it. If you have a K-5th grader in your sphere of influence, draw them nearer to God by sending them to HopeKids! Hangout!

SUPERBOWL SUNDAY:

WEDNESDAY NIGHTS IN THE GOZONE:
Each week we will be looking back at our Bible story from Sunday morning in a new way and doing fresh activities to reinforce our monthly theme. Plus, we’ll be storing God’s Word in our hearts by learning and practicing a new Bible verse every week—so you won’t want your kids to miss a single Wednesday!

WEDNESDAY NIGHTS IN THE WONDERZONE:
The Nursery team is excited to love on your little ones (0-2), while our Preschool (3-5) team dives into an Alphabet Scripture Memory study! Every week they will learn a new Bible Verse, and each week they return with their verse memorized, they’ll earn a letter to attach to their Scripture Sash! Your kids will want to join us every Wednesday night to plant God’s Word in their hearts, earn all of their letters, have fun building a foundation of faith, and even have a chance to connect with our GoZone kids every week!
