Hope Notes 10/25/23

October 25, 2023
Hello Hoper,
Is it just me or do the Halloween decorations seem to get more and more elaborate every year?  I’ve never paid that much attention to them, but now with a three year old often riding in the car with me, I find myself having to explain over and over again what they are, how they aren’t real, and why some people like scary things!  It’s no wonder I’ve been thinking about all kinds of spooky things and spirits! I highly doubt that any of us have any ‘evil spirits’ like the ones used for decoration at Halloween residing inside of us.  But we DO have some spirits that would be better off banished.  I’ll just name a few.
Spirit of Discouragement: The word discouragement comes from the root word courage. The           prefix dis means ‘the opposite of’. So discouragement is the opposite of courage. When we are discouraged, we lose the motivation to press forward. The mountain seems too steep, the valley too dark, or the battle too fierce, and we lose the courage to continue.  There’s a remedy for that: “The LORD himself will lead you and be with you. He will not fail you or abandon you, so do not lose courage or be afraid.”(Deuteronomy 31:8)
Spirit of Negativity
:  Negative people tend to focus on others people’s faults (or their own faults). They point out shortcomings with their comments, attitudes, and frowns. Remember – “The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” (Proverbs 12:18)
Spirit of Comparison: Comparison opens the door for lies that steal our confidence and cause us to feel less than others. Social media has exacerbated the situation since most people only tend to share the highlights of their lives. We watch others who have more money, a bigger house, a successful career, or a loving family, and we don’t feel we measure up. Scripture says, “Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load.” (Galatians 6:4-5)
Give the Holy Spirit more room in our hearts and cultivate the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).  Before you know it, those unhealthy spirits won’t have any room to flourish.

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE:
A Word from Jim JeffersonWEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDIES:
Join us at 6:30 for coffee & fellowship before heading into our classes at 7:00pm. There are programs for kids, teens, and adults. In fact, new classes begin this week:

  • “Find Rest” led by Damon Briggs begins October 25th: Are you a tired Christian? Does your life seem like one endless rush after another? • “Leading at Hope” led by Pastor Mark on Nov 1st & 8th: A discussion of some of our basic approaches to leadership for anyone who is serving in a leading role, or who wants to learn more about Biblical approaches to leadership.

SMALL GROUP ORIENTATION:

SUNDAY NIGHT SERIES: How To Read The Bible for Dummies
How do you even use the Bible? It’s big, it looks weird, and it’s written by folks who are long dead and lived far away. How can this be useful in your day to day life, let alone the guiding light? These and many other questions are precisely what our new series seeks to address! By learning reading techniques, basics of interpretation, and helpful habits the Bible will go from a dusty book on your shelf to a vital part of your daily life.

Dress up and pig out with us for this special Youth Group as we celebrate Thanksgiving with our fancy dress night! Don your Sunday best and compete for prizes in fun fall games! Dinner starts at 6pm so don’t be late! We’ll also be diving into the theme of gratefulness as we enter the season of thanksgiving. Bring a friend, and don’t miss out!

WEDNESDAY NIGHTS:
We’re diving deep into the Word on Wednesday Nights! Join us for some fun and some focus as we crack open the book of Psalms and see what awesome truths we can learn! Taking it one chapter at a time, we’ll learn about these ancient poems and see just how they speak to us today! It’s also a great opportunity to group with friends, pray for each other, and grow closer to God. Hope to see you there!

30 HOUR FAMINE: November 11th-12th
Every 30 hours roughly 7,000 kids will die of starvation. We don’t think that’s right, so Hope Youth is raising awareness and money to better serve and feed families around the world. We’re doing this through 30 Hour Famine with World Vision, and organization committed to feeding communities as well as providing them with the education and equipment to feed themselves in the future. A simple donation of $40 can feed a child for a whole month and you wouldn’t believe what more can do. Join us in raising money to fight hunger by donating on our World Vision event page here. If your student is interested in taking part in this service opportunity they can join us through the link above, and in-person from 6:00pm on Friday, November 10th to 2:00pm on Saturday, November 11th.

WEDNESDAY NIGHTS:
None of our HopeKids! will want to miss our Wednesday night programs this Fall!
