Hope Notes 08/16/2023

August 16, 2023

Hello Hoper,
I’ve come to realize there’s something I’m in the habit of doing with my little grandson Maverick.  I whisper to him.  I find myself whispering in his ear for a number of different reasons. If I really need him to pay attention.  If I’m trying to stop a whining cycle. It’s a good distraction if he’s crying. It helps when I need to offer an explanation of why something is a ‘no’. All in all, it’s turned out to be quite the handy little tool!  I think one of the reasons it works so well is because, in order to hear what I’m saying, he automatically has to be quiet and we need to be very close for my words to reach his little ears.
As I recognize the benefits of whispering, it brings new insight to my thoughts about the one place in Scripture where we read about God whispering and how it pertains to us.   “….After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.” (1 Kings 19:11-12)  Too often we are waiting for the ‘thunder of His voice’ (Job 37:2) while in actuality He has been quietly whispering to us all along.  I know I am often not close enough, still enough, or aware enough to pick up His quiet voice.  When God whispers to us, His words are personal and private.  Let us make every effort to become more attuned and to get close enough to hear His breath formed into words meant just for us.
Listening for His gentle whispers  ~ Lois

SPIRITUAL CARE

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE:
Morning of Worship

We’re coming together this morning to fill up our church with voices of praise. We’ll spend the morning worshiping through the themes in the Lord’s Prayer, found in Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4. We worship God through prayer and music, and Sunday we’ll get to do both together with our church family. Join us to be a part of this wonderful experience. We need your heart and your voice to be a part of bringing glory to our Lord!

WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDIES: Coming Soon!
We’re only a month away from resuming our Wednesday night programs! And you won’t want to miss our kickoff, because we’re having a pizza party and ice cream sundaes for the whole family! Join us on Wednesday, September 6th at 6:00pm for dinner and fellowship. Then we’ll move into our classes at 7:00pm. There will be programs for kids, teens, and adults! Choose from one of the below studies and sign-up in the lobby:

  • “Hedonists for Heaven” led by Pastor Dan: Life is full of weight, be it tragedy or the daily grind, and at the end of the day all we want is a break. The hedonist believes that the break is the thing, that seeking joy and pleasure is not only the goal, but the meaning of life. What if I told you that, as Christians, that should be our goal too? The only difference between a Christian and a hedonist in fact is that we know where real pleasure is found, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!
  • “Faith, Identity & Hope in a Fallen World” led by Pastor Ryan: Can we be confident in God and the Bible? Where should we find our sense of self, our value, and our purpose? How can we hold onto hope when things around us feel so hopeless? We’ll tackle those questions together as we look at what the biblical narrative has to say about faith, identity and hope in a fallen world.
  • “What Does The Bible Say About the Future?” led by Pastor Mark: If you’ve heard of ‘the Rapture’, the ‘Tribulation’, or any of the other Biblical concepts, we’ll see where these ideas come from and look at the debate around them. It won’t be a “have it all figured out” class. But it will help you know both how to study your Bible and the overarching ideas that Christians have about End Times Prophecies.

PRAYER HUDDLE:
If you’re volunteering on a Sunday morning, whether its greeting, HopeKids!, in the sound booth, etc., please join us for a team prayer huddle! We want to gather together everyone who is serving that morning to pray for the services. Meet at 8:40 in the GoZone!

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER:
Anyone can join us Sunday mornings at 8:30 in Pastor Mark’s office to pray for that morning’s services. Contact Bob Baumiester for more information (rbaumiester@gmail.com).
