Hope Notes 08/09/2023

August 9, 2023

Hello Hoper,
The first week of August hangs at the top of summer, much like a Ferris wheel when it is poised and waiting to drop. All the weeks that came before seem like a lead in to the full hot temperatures of the summer sun.  All the weeks that come after begin the slow descent to the cooler days of autumn.  As a child, that first week in August would set off an unfortunate spiral of anxiety.  I knew that the beginning of August meant a new school year was about to begin.  School was a huge source of angst for me.  And so I would then do the very thing we (as believers especially) should not.  I began to stress and worry about that school year well in advance of its actual occurrence. I would look for signs that summer was ending.  The bark on the sycamore trees beginning to peel.  The lights and shadows shifting their position across our porch.  The school supplies that made their way into the stores.  All of this had the predictable effect of ruining those last ‘lazy hazy days’ of summer for me. This very reason is why Matthew 6:34 tells us NOT to worry about tomorrow. “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”  If only I had known that Jesus Himself offers us a peace that the world cannot give us; a peace that we can claim as His children. “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” (John 14:27 NLT)  I like to think it would have made a difference, but of course I cannot say for certain that my little girl heart would have taken hold of that.  So many children (and adults) today face all kinds of worries. I hate to see someone prolonging the anxiety by beginning to worry ‘ahead of time’.  (Side note:  Did you know research shows that approximately 90% of what we worry about never even happens??)  So, let’s try and curb those early worries with prayer and by remembering these words of Philippians 4:6-7 NLT. “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”

SPIRITUAL CARE

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE:
Morning of Worship

We’re coming together this morning to fill up our church with voices of praise. We’ll spend the morning worshiping through the themes in the Lord’s Prayer, found in Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4. We worship God through prayer and music, and Sunday we’ll get to do both together with our church family. Join us to be a part of this wonderful experience. We need your heart and your voice to be a part of bringing glory to our Lord!

WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDIES: Coming Soon!
We’re only a month away from resuming our Wednesday night programs! And you won’t want to miss our kickoff, because we’re having a pizza party and ice cream sundaes for the whole family! Join us on Wednesday, September 6th at 6:00pm for dinner and fellowship. Then we’ll move into our classes at 7:00pm. There will be programs for kids, teens, and adults! Choose from one of the below studies and sign-up in the lobby:

  • “Hedonists for Heaven” led by Pastor Dan: Life is full of weight, be it tragedy or the daily grind, and at the end of the day all we want is a break. The hedonist believes that the break is the thing, that seeking joy and pleasure is not only the goal, but the meaning of life. What if I told you that, as Christians, that should be our goal too? The only difference between a Christian and a hedonist in fact is that we know where real pleasure is found, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!
  • “Faith, Identity & Hope in a Fallen World” led by Pastor Ryan: Can we be confident in God and the Bible? Where should we find our sense of self, our value, and our purpose? How can we hold onto hope when things around us feel so hopeless? We’ll tackle those questions together as we look at what the biblical narrative has to say about faith, identity and hope in a fallen world.
  • “What Does The Bible Say About the Future?” led by Pastor Mark: If you’ve heard of ‘the Rapture’, the ‘Tribulation’, or any of the other Biblical concepts, we’ll see where these ideas come from and look at the debate around them. It won’t be a “have it all figured out” class. But it will help you know both how to study your Bible and the overarching ideas that Christians have about End Times Prophecies.

PRAYER HUDDLE:
If you’re volunteering on a Sunday morning, whether its greeting, HopeKids!, in the sound booth, etc., please join us for a team prayer huddle! We want to gather together everyone who is serving that morning to pray for the services. Meet at 8:40 in the GoZone!

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER:
Anyone can join us Sunday mornings at 8:30 in Pastor Mark’s office to pray for that morning’s services. Contact Bob Baumiester for more information (rbaumiester@gmail.com).
