Hope Notes 07/05/2023

July 5, 2023

Hello Hoper,
I just finished reading the Old Testament book of Ezra and towards the end were some verses that I have kept going back to, reading them over and over again.  They speak to the graciousness of our God and the sinful nature of man. Ezra was distressed about the problem of intermarriage in the community and Chapter 9 is basically his prayer to the Lord. Let me share with you the verses that spoke so loudly to me:

  • “….our sins are higher than our heads and our guilt has reached to the heavens.”vs 6
  • “BUT the LORD our God has been GRACIOUS in leaving us a remnant ……….our GOD GIVES LIGHT TO OUR EYES….”vs 8
  • “We have DISREGARDED the commands you gave…”vs 10
  • “What has happened to us is a result of our evil deeds and our great guilt, and YET, our God, you have PUNISHED US LESS THAN OUR SINS DESERVE…”vs 13

Sorry for all the capitals and underlining; I’m not shouting at you, just emphasizing the words that humbled me.  Despite all their sin and blatant disregard for God’s commands, He continued to show His great love and compassion towards them (us).
How many times do we hear people say, ‘I deserve’ as in perhaps a relationship, financial status, career, etc.? And while that may be true in certain situations, mostly our culture is all about focusing on ourselves and on what we believe is our right to have. But what comes to mind for me in hearing those words is my gratefulness to God for NOT receiving what I deserve. “He has not treated us as we deserve for our sins or paid us back for our wrongs” (Psalm 103:10 NLT)  Salvation comes to the undeserving because God offers it as a gift to us based on who He is and not on what we deserve. He offers it based on His love and goodness to every undeserving person who will receive it. “God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” (Romans 5:8)
Thankful for His Mercy……Lois

Rely on God (2 Cor. 1:8-11)
Plus an update from Josh + Kelly Hallahan!

You’ve probably heard someone say that God will not give you more than you can handle. It is a well-intended statement, but ultimately it is misleading. God does indeed put us in situations that overwhelm us and cause us to despair. Paul tells the Corinthians that he and his friends experienced exactly this in Asia. And then he goes on to tell them how knowing Jesus transformed that experience from loss into gain. It is a pattern that the Corinthian church was invited to follow and that we are too! When we learn how to rely on the Lord, we find a deliverance and hope that we can hold on to.

If you’re volunteering on a Sunday morning, whether its greeting, HopeKids!, in the sound booth, etc., please join us for a team prayer huddle! We want to gather together everyone who is serving that morning to pray for the services. Meet at 8:40 in the GoZone!

Anyone can join us Sunday mornings at 8:30 in Pastor Mark’s office to pray for that morning’s services. Contact Bob Baumiester for more information (rbaumiester@gmail.com).

Hope is supporting Kids Alley in the month of July by collecting items for the upcoming school year for kids in need!
