Hope Notes 08/17/2022

August 17, 2022

Hello Hoper ~
Craig Groeschel said, “Comparison will either make you feel inferior or superior. NEITHER honors God.”  When I think about comparing myself to others, it is usually in the context of something they do or have that I am lacking. But I never really thought about the opposite; when people compare themselves to others to show how wonderful they themselves are!  In 2 Corinthians 10:12, Paul talks about the false teachers in Corinth who ‘compared themselves among themselves’, looking only to their own accomplishments and ignored any excellence in others.  They formed a disproportionate opinion of themselves and undervalued everyone else.  We’ve probably all seen this type of behavior, whether in the middle school ‘cool kids’ clique or in corporate America where board members believe only they have the solution to a given situation. Paul warns about this in Romans 12:3. “Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.”
Back to the other side of the coin. Comparing ourselves to others in a way that leaves us feeling less than, discouraged, or bad about our own selves is just as destructive.  We have the assurance that we are ‘fearfully and wonderfully made’ (Psalm 139:14) with our own set of abilities, gifts, and talents.  Theodore Roosevelt uttered this famous phrase – “Comparison is the thief of joy.” We can surrender comparison when we remember who we really are; beloved members of “….a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” (1 Peter 2:9) So let’s try and take comparison, in any way, off the table and just enjoy who God has made each of us to be.

We are all who He says we are; no better and no worse – Lois

What’s Mine Is Yours | Small Group Kickoff
(Philippians 2:1-11; Mark 5:21-34; Matthew 25:31-46; Mark 12:13-17)

One of the most natural inclinations we have as humans is a desire to use what is ours for ourselves. We spend the first several years of children’s lives teaching them to share. We never have to teach them to be protective of what is theirs. We do get better at sharing, but we also get better at hiding the fact that we aren’t sharing. As adults, we can be quite possessive of that which we deem is rightfully ours – especially our attention, actions, and money. But the whole of scripture is pretty clear, everything we have that we call “ours” is actually a gift from God. And what’s more, God didn’t give it to us so we can use it on ourselves. As followers of God, we are supposed to use all of our resources for the benefit of others. Jesus is the clearest example as his life is an embodiment of the expression, “What’s Mine Is Yours.”

WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY: “Foundations” Three Part Series – Coming Soon!
We hear a lot about ‘deconstructing’ Christians today.  And we face questions as well as casual but presumptively certain statements about God, Christians, the Bible and truth. How can we navigate these waters without losing our faith?  We’re going to kick off our Fall Wednesday Nights with three introductory lessons on ‘Foundations’.  Each week we’re going to look at a major topic that we can later digest in more detail.  But if we are informed and trained in these areas, the chances of us being taken off guard by a skeptics comments or even losing our way when we question our faith are greatly diminished.  We want to find solid ground to stand on in the current cultural discussions and debates, so join us as we target a few places to find our footing. Begins September 7th at 7:00; in-person only; childcare provided.

If you’re volunteering on a Sunday morning, whether its greeting, HopeKids!, in the sound booth, etc., please join us for a team prayer huddle! We want to gather together everyone who is serving that morning to pray for the services. Meet at 8:15 in the Youth Room.

Join us Sunday mornings at 8:00 in Pastor Mark’s office to pray for that morning’s services. Contact Bob Baumiester for more information (rbaumiester@gmail.com).

Philippians 3:13-14

Brothers I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead.  I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Year 1: Romans
Year 2: Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther
Psalms 89-102

This small group will provide our senior high students with the opportunity to dive more deeply into the Word and create a space to more vulnerably and openly discuss faith and how it comes up against the challenges of the world. Meetings will be held on the first Thursday of every month at 7:00, starting in September. The first meeting will be hosted by youth leaders Josh and Becky DeWalt at 81 Davidson Rd, Swedesboro NJ 08085

GROW GROUPS: Returning September 4th!
Hope Youth resumes its annual Grow Group series on “big church”, helping 6th graders transition from Go Zone to adult Sunday services. For 6 weeks (9/4-10/9) 6th graders will learn together in a small group setting the core aspects of church, why the Church works the way it does, and how we can all be a part of making it happen! Grow Groups will take place in Go Zone 2 during the 8:30 service following worship. Can’t wait to see your students there!

OCEAN CITY RETREAT: September 23rd-25th
Ocean City has always been a great kick-off event for our senior high (9th-12th grades) as well as a time for students to build bonds that our brief time on Sunday nights doesn’t quite allow for. It’s also a whole weekend of making new friends, playing games, and encountering God so if you’re looking for another good event to invite a friend to, this is the big one! Contact Pastor Dan for a permission slip!

Parents, stay up to date with everything happening on our

calendar here!

All our WonderZone and GoZone friends are invited to our HopeKids! Back to School Kickoff on Saturday, September 10th from 10:00a – noon. We’re throwing a party to celebrate the new school year—with music, games, school supplies! Don’t miss it! Sign-up at either registration table!

HOPEKIDS HANGOUT: Returns September 11th at a new time!
All elementary kids are invited to join us in the GoZone on Sunday nights from 6PM-8PM for an extra dose of fun and Bible study. Just like on Sunday mornings, we gather together for games, Bible stories, and prayer—but with an extra hour there’s twice the excitement, bigger games, and more time to get to know each other! This September we will be continuing our journey through What’s In the Bible, picking up where we left off and brushing up on our Old Testament knowledge.

We offer childcare and classes from our littlest Hopers to our 5th graders every Sunday morning at both the 8:30 & 10 services. Each classroom is staffed with friendly and enthusiastic teachers and helpers who are background checked to ensure your child’s safety. Our WonderZone! serves our youngest children, who are full of wonder about who God is! We have an infant room, one-year-old room, toddler classroom, and a pre-K classroom in order to serve each child with an age-appropriate curriculum. K-5th graders gather in the youth room for our opening service called The GoZone! where we GO for God, GO for growth and GO forever through worship, games and an interactive lesson through teaching and videos. The K-5th graders are then split up into age appropriate small groups to dive deeper into the lesson where they can share their own experiences and ask any questions they may have.
