Hope Notes 07/20/2022

July 20, 2022

Hello Hoper ~
What are you views on astrology?  What do you say when someone asks, “what sign are you”?  It might sound silly or picky to some, but I hate when someone asks me that. I never used to know what to say because I didn’t want it to seem like I agreed with or followed astrology. Neither did I want to claim ignorance, because I do know my sign; I just didn’t want them to immediately launch into all my supposed personality traits.  Well I finally came up with a good answer!  Want to know what it is?  I simply say – the sign of the cross, or the sign of the icthus (Christian fish).  I tell them I don’t follow the stars, I follow the One who MADE the stars.  Genesis 1:1 tells us ‘In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”  Verse 19 plainly states, ‘He made the stars’.  Psalm 147:4 says “He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.’  Isn’t that a great response?! Maybe some of you have already thought of that and I’m just a little late hopping on the train!  But I wish I had known that years ago when the dance company I was in did a number in which the opening called for each of us to walk across the stage carrying a different astrological sign.  I refused to do it and could only say I didn’t believe in astrology.  I wasn’t able to make the connection between my faith and their belief system.  I wish I had thought to make my sign the Christian fish or a cross……………and then walk boldly and proudly across that stage.  So I’m sharing this little story with you all today with the hope that maybe it will give those who are struggling like I was an easy answer when that annoying topic comes up!
My sign resides in heaven – Lois

Bringing Outsiders In | VBS Kickoff
(Leviticus 19:9-10, 18, 33-34; Ephesians 2:11-18; Matthew 5:46-47; 1 Corinthians 9:19-22)

As we kickoff our week of Vacation Bible School, we are going to continue our discussion about the practice we need in the things that Christians do.  In fact, we’re going to talk about one of the ways we practice loving people in this week, and the mindset that it reflects. In a world where social anxiety and tribalism dominates our connections (or lack thereof), we believe that being a Christian includes a heart to include those who are different or strange.  So this week, we intentionally work hard to invite outsiders into the family and to serve them in love. This concept is familiar, but we’re going to give it some basis from Scripture.  Then we’ll turn our attention from ‘discussing’ to ‘doing’ as we launch into a week where we can apply what we’ll hear this morning!

If you’re volunteering on a Sunday morning, whether its greeting, HopeKids!, in the sound booth, etc., please join us for a team prayer huddle! We want to gather together everyone who is serving that morning to pray for the services. Meet at 8:15 in the Youth Room.

Join us Sunday mornings at 8:00 in Pastor Mark’s office to pray for that morning’s services. Contact Bob Baumiester for more information (rbaumiester@gmail.com).

Psalm 101:3
“I will not look with approval on anything that is vile; I hate what faithless people do; I will have no part in it.”

Year 1: 2 Kings
Year 2: 2 Chronicles
Psalms 78-88

Parents, stay up to date with everything happening on our calendar here!

We offer childcare and classes from our littlest Hopers to our 5th graders every Sunday morning at both the 8:30 & 10 services. Each classroom is staffed with friendly and enthusiastic teachers and helpers who are background checked to ensure your child’s safety. Our WonderZone! serves our youngest children, who are full of wonder about who God is! We have an infant room, one-year-old room, toddler classroom, and a pre-K classroom in order to serve each child with an age-appropriate curriculum. K-5th graders gather in the youth room for our opening service called The GoZone! where we GO for God, GO for growth and GO forever through worship, games and an interactive lesson through teaching and videos. The K-5th graders are then split up into age appropriate small groups to dive deeper into the lesson where they can share their own experiences and ask any questions they may have.

For questions about WonderZone (0-PreK) contact Kara May at karamay@hopechristianfellowship.org
