Hope Notes 06/08/2022

June 8, 2022

Hello Hoper ~
Our grandson Maverick is truly teaching me so many things.  Since he is two, you can imagine how he is teaching me to practice the art of patience!  He also teaches me how to stop and look at the simplest things – a tiny bug, a drop of water, an itty bitty speck of a plane high up in the sky. There is wonder in his eyes and I see his brain processing every detail.  I’ve realized that I miss so much in my day to day activities, simply because I don’t stop and focus on these wondrous and simple things.  He shows me how to find joy in the mundane, accompanied by peals of laughter over the silliest things.  But the one thing I’m learning from him that is most beneficial is the art of being fully present. Experiencing each moment completely. I find I naturally want to do this when I’m with him because he is growing up so fast and I want to imprint these precious moments onto my soul.  Unlike adults, toddlers are always living right there in the present.  Time is still abstract to them.  Telling them ‘later, tomorrow, or in a minute’ doesn’t mean much.  What matters is what’s happening right then. While I am definitely learning this from Maverick, I realized that the Bible also has something to say about it!
We always have the choice to focus on the past, present, or future. Thoughts about the past can be focused on old hurts and regrets. But God’s Word directs us to settling our mind on the present. “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.” (Isaiah 43:18)  Most of us probably familiar with what Jesus had to say regarding worrying about the future: “So do not worry about tomorrow; it will have enough worries of its own. There is no need to add to the troubles each day brings.” (Matthew 6:34 GNT) Thinking about past hurts or worries about the future, will only rob us of joy and keep us from living in the moment. We can take this verse to help us stay focused on the present – “This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24)  If we can at least get ourselves to be focused on each day, surely working up to being present for each moment will follow!

Don’t Pray for Patience
(I Cor 13:4; Proverbs 14:29; Proverbs 16:32)

Think for a minute about someone you love. We probably think of feelings first when we try to identify love.  While love definitely includes feelings, it is much more.  In fact, when we read the description of love in 1 Corinthians 13, we find a very different picture of love.  Love is choices, and probably not ones you ‘feel’ like making.  As we continue to talk about the practice it takes to be a Christian, we’re going to shift to talking about loving people.  And we’re starting with ‘love is patient’ and ‘love is kind’. Chances are you’ve thought of yourself as ‘loving’ someone with whom you were also impatient and unkind.  So let’s think through what kind of practices it takes and what patience and kindness bring to our lives.

If you’re volunteering on a Sunday morning, whether its greeting, HopeKids!, in the sound booth, etc., please join us for a team prayer huddle! We want to gather together everyone who is serving that morning to pray for the services. Meet at 8:15 in GoZone 2.

Join us Sunday mornings at 8:00 in Pastor Mark’s office to pray for that morning’s services. Contact Bob Baumiester for more information (rbaumiester@gmail.com).

James 4:6
“But He gives us more grace. That is why scripture says: God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

HOPE DAILY: Available on Apple Podcasts & Spotify!
We post a 10 minute episode daily, Monday through Friday. You’ll hear from a variety of our staff as they share devotional thoughts and scriptures. Listen on Apple, Spotify, or on our website

For the month of May we averaged $10,654 per week which brings our annual average to $9,782.  Our target for this year is $9450, so our current pattern of giving had met and exceeded our target to this point.  We are celebrating what God has done and grateful for a church family who gives faithfully and sacrificially towards God’s work at Hope!

First impressions matter, and we care about the impression we give new people as they come through our doors on a Sunday morning. Help us steward the gift God has given us in our building and join our Facilities Team! We are looking to put together a team that will work to keep the building tidy and service-ready. If you are available Saturday evenings or Sunday mornings and think this could be a good fit, email Eric & Sherri Riddell at esriddell1194@gmail.com

HOPE SHARE: Facebook Group
Don’t throw it out – share it! Hope Share a place to post things we no longer use and to look for things we do! It’s easy to upload photos of items you’d like to give away and to search for that special item you just might need. Hope Share is private for Hopers and an easy way to help meet each other’s needs in the church. Request to join here!

Hey ladies! Summer is almost here and what’s more fun than a pool-side picnic lunch with friends? We hope you’ll join us on Saturday, July 2nd from 11:00am – 2:00pm for our “Sip ‘n Dip Ladies Event” at the Baumiester’s home (750 Fairview Ave. Woodbury Heights, NJ 08097). There are two sign up sheets in the front lobby – one is to let us know that you can attend and the other is if you’d like to bring a side dish or dessert to share! We’ll supply the sandwiches and cold drinks so we’ll need a headcount for set up and supplies. Remember your bathing suit and towel if you’d like to swim! This is an event for all our ladies post high school and up – hope to see you there! Contact Dana at danaott@hopechristianfellowship.org for more info!

In lieu of our normal “Workshop Wednesdays,” this June we are highlighting three of our ministries that do not meet weekly throughout the year. So for these four consecutive weeks you’ll get to experience God’s Girls, Men’s Breakfast, or Young Adults as a special series.

  • Men’s Breakfast – At Night!
We’ll be centering our study on Romans 12:1-2. What does it mean to be a living sacrifice? How do we avoid being conformed to the patterns of this world? How do we go about being transformed by the renewing of our minds? Through all of this we’ll look to recognize the sovereignty of the Father & Son and train ourselves to walk in the Spirit. Open to all men 18 and older.
  • Young Adults – Becoming Who We Want To Be
None of us just arrived at the person we are today. We’ve been shaped and molded to be who we are – both intentionally and unintentionally. Over these four weeks we’ll look at practices that will root us in the ways of Jesus so we can become who we were created to be. Open to high school graduates through their 20s.
  • God’s Girls
Join us for a time of fellowship, study, and prayer as the women of Hope. We’ll be looking at the parables of Jesus. Open to all ladies 18 and older.

Meets 1st & 3rd Tuesdays at 7:30
The Young Adults ministry at Hope Christian Fellowship is a group of post-high school through their twenties adults truly seeking to explore life, engage culture, and empower change while remaining ground in the Word of God. Any questions, contact Pastor Dave at dave@hopechristianfellowship.org
