Hope Notes 06/01/2022

June 1, 2022

Hello Hoper ~
I can hardly believe Memorial Day weekend has come and gone already! For some reason it marks the beginning of the summer season, even though most children aren’t finished with school yet. Not sure how this came to be, but there it is!  This leads me to a little reflection on summer time, vacations, and church attendance.  Doesn’t it seem like when summer rolls around, church sometimes gets a little bit emptier?  Of course there are those times when families break away from their normal schedule to spend time together on vacation.  But I’m not talking about that I’m referring in general to the strange phenomenon that occurs when people just simply ‘take a vacation’ from church!  I don’t know why that is.  God certainly never takes a vacation from us!  Where would God GO on vacation, anyway?  He already lives in heaven complete with streets of gold, crystal seas, rivers of living water, and trees bearing all kinds of luscious fruits! (I am loosely paraphrasing Revelation here.)  Anyway, let’s not get caught up in believing that summer relaxation requires filling your Sunday with other things besides church.  It is best for our souls and our spiritual growth to continue regular church attendance. We need to not only hear the Word, but we need the fellowship of other believers. “Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:25)  Hey, here at Hope we even have an early service at 8:30 so you can get your day started on the right path and still have plenty of time for other activities!  If you’re exhausted from all your Saturday summer fun, sleep in and come to the 10:00 service. So there are no excuses! God deserves our time and our worship all through the year, including those lazy days of summer!

What Cost Me Nothing
(Romans 12:1; 2 Samuel 24:18-25)

Did you ever wish you could win the lottery? Maybe you dream of all the bills you’ll pay off or all the stuff you’ll buy.  In your best moments, you think about all the people you’ll help. But did you ever think that giving away what you get for free doesn’t mean as much to your soul as giving away what you earn yourself?  It’s even possible that a large amount of money that suddenly appears in your life could be detrimental to your well-being.  Today we’re going to look at a story from the life of David where he makes a statement that should challenge us in our service toward the Lord.  Do we just give the Lord the left-overs or extras?  Or do we give Him something that actually costs us personally?  This idea of sacrifice is central to living out a deep love for Jesus.  Today, we start looking at things we need to practice as believers, and in connection to loving God, we need to practice sacrifice.

If you’re volunteering on a Sunday morning, whether its greeting, HopeKids!, in the sound booth, etc., please join us for a team prayer huddle! We want to gather together everyone who is serving that morning to pray for the services. Meet at 8:15 in GoZone 2.

Join us Sunday mornings at 8:00 in Pastor Mark’s office to pray for that morning’s services. Contact Bob Baumiester for more information (rbaumiester@gmail.com).

James 4:6
“But He gives us more grace. That is why scripture says: God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

Hey ladies! Summer is almost here and what’s more fun than a pool-side picnic lunch with friends? We hope you’ll join us on Saturday, July 2nd from 11:00am – 2:00pm for our “Sip ‘n Dip Ladies Event” at the Baumiester’s home (750 Fairview Ave. Woodbury Heights, NJ 08097). There are two sign up sheets in the front lobby – one is to let us know that you can attend and the other is if you’d like to bring a side dish or dessert to share! We’ll supply the sandwiches and cold drinks so we’ll need a headcount for set up and supplies. Remember your bathing suit and towel if you’d like to swim! This is an event for all our ladies post high school and up – hope to see you there! Contact Dana at danaott@hopechristianfellowship.org for more info!

A family at Hope has a somewhat urgent need for a housing arrangement. They are in need of a three bedroom house or accommodation. If you are able to help us fulfill this need, please contact our Needs Team at needs@hopechristianfellowship.org

FIGHT CLUB: Two Meetings Left!

Fight Club will meet at church in Go Zone 2 on Tuesdays at 7:00. For more information, contact Dan by text (856-285-9016) or email danlein@hopechristianfellowship.org

Men, join us for food and some friendly competition on Saturday, June 11th starting at 10:00a. Register here as an individual or a team: teams will be 3-5 people. We’ll have hot dogs & burgers after. Come early at 8:00 for a full breakfast!

WEDNESDAYS IN JUNE: Starts tonight at 7:00!
In lieu of our normal “Workshop Wednesdays,” this June we are highlighting three of our ministries that do not meet weekly throughout the year. So for these four consecutive weeks you’ll get to experience God’s Girls, Men’s Breakfast, or Young Adults as a special series.

  • Men’s Breakfast – At Night!
We’ll be centering our study on Romans 12:1-2. What does it mean to be a living sacrifice? How do we avoid being conformed to the patterns of this world? How do we go about being transformed by the renewing of our minds? Through all of this we’ll look to recognize the sovereignty of the Father & Son and train ourselves to walk in the Spirit. Open to all men 18 and older.
  • Young Adults – Becoming Who We Want To Be
None of us just arrived at the person we are today. We’ve been shaped and molded to be who we are – both intentionally and unintentionally. Over these four weeks we’ll look at practices that will root us in the ways of Jesus so we can become who we were created to be. Open to high school graduates through their 20s.
  • God’s Girls
Join us for a time of fellowship, study, and prayer as the women of Hope. We’ll be looking at the parables of Jesus. Open to all ladies 18 and older.

Meets 1st & 3rd Tuesdays at 7:30
The Young Adults ministry at Hope Christian Fellowship is a group of post-high school through their twenties adults truly seeking to explore life, engage culture, and empower change while remaining ground in the Word of God. Any questions, contact Pastor Dave at dave@hopechristianfellowship.org

YOUTH GROUP: Sunday Nights 6-8:00pm
