Hope Notes 05/04/2022

May 4, 2022

Hello Hoper ~
Years ago I had a frightening experience with our trash can.  I opened the lid without a second thought and a giant metallic balloon flew out and hit me in the face!  Those of you who know me can only imagine the dance of terror that ensued. There may or may not have been some screaming involved as well.  It was my childhood fear of jack-in-the-boxes but on steroids!  I slapped that balloon around frantically, but it won the battle and floated off towards heaven unscathed.  Why would someone put an inflated balloon in the trash can without popping it?!  Turns out my hubby found it in the yard, deflated and lifeless.  The sun beating down on the trash can revived it (apparently cold deflates and heat inflates) so there it was in all its menacing glory waiting to accost me the moment I opened the lid.
Although there are numerous verses on fear in the Bible, I will confess that not one of them entered my mind at the time!  I guess I hadn’t done a very god job of ‘hiding God’s Word in my heart’, did I?  Sometimes fear comes out of nowhere (like that balloon) but other times fear is an ever present background buzz deep within our being.  It hums in the recesses of our minds causing us to be anxious and afraid.  We forget that ”……..God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” (2Timothy 1:7)  In reality, there ARE many things we could be fearful of:  losing a loved one, losing our health, losing a job.  But God does not want us to be afraid of these things.  He wants us to rely on Him.  To trust that He will take care of us, provide for us, to strengthen us for the battles we are bound to face. “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)
I did succumb to the panic when that balloon slithered up and out of my trash can, but I would like to think that, in regards to other fears, I would be able to follow the guideline found in Hebrews 13:6 – “So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals (or balloons) do to me?” How about you?

Balaam’s Story: Improving the Rules
(Numbers 27:1-11)

If you grew up with siblings, you may have experienced this dynamic.  In a specific situation, you made a deal together meant to sidestep the bickering and fighting that naturally happens between siblings.  Whether it was who got to sit in the front seat, or who got to pick the restaurant, or even who got to play first with a favorite toy, you all agreed. And then someone decided it was unfair!  This kind of reality isn’t limited to sibling debates.  When a group of people or a leader try to come up with guidelines and rules meant to help everyone, it often misses someone.  And the only way we find that out is to live through the setup for a little while before the flaws start showing up.  The Law that Israel had been given had a hole in it, and after living with the law for a while, some women point it out.  This short story in Numbers points to both the courage of these women for speaking up, and the heart of Israel’s leaders in addressing it.  It’s also an example for God’s people today to faithful reflect His heart in our dealings with one another.

If you’re volunteering on a Sunday morning, whether its greeting, HopeKids!, in the sound booth, etc., please join us for a team prayer huddle! We want to gather together everyone who is serving that morning to pray for the services. Meet at 8:15 in GoZone 2.

Join us Sunday mornings at 8:00 in Pastor Mark’s office to pray for that morning’s services. Contact Bob Baumiester for more information (rbaumiester@gmail.com).

If God has brought you to Hope and convinced you over time that this is the church for you, we’d love for you to become a partner. This is our way of doing ‘membership’, but we use the word ‘partner’ instead because it connects us to the Biblical idea that we are called to partner together in ministry (Philippians 1:3-6). As partners, we share the burdens and work of the ministry together, and we serve our Lord as a team. Partners are able to vote on our budget, as well as elect deacons and leadership team candidates. To become a partner, grab a form from the lobby or download one here, fill out, and hand in to Pastor Mark or any of the elders. Any questions, contact Pastor Mark at markott@hopechristianfellowship.org
