Hope Notes 04/27/2022

April 27, 2022

Hello Hoper ~
I love to write. I know you’re thinking, “Duh of course you do. You’re writing these Notes right now!”  But that’s not what I mean.  I’m talking about the actual, physical act of putting pen to paper and forming the letters.  I love the smell of the ink, the texture of different papers, and the feel of the pen as it skims across the page. Which, by the way, it has to make a scritch- scratch feel to it, not too smooth, and it MUST be fine point! I’ve been known to reject pens because they just don’t feel right (okay or smell right!). I like the paper to have a particular quality to it. I don’t know what I would have done if I had to write back in the day when the Bible was being written!  They had only the most rudimentary of materials – parchment or vellum, papyrus and most likely reed or quill pens. (Although I’m sure those pens would have the appropriate scratchiness!) It was a laborious process to first make the ‘paper’ and then the ‘ink’.  And think of all the words that needed to be written.  God breathed, Spirit inspired words! “Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture comes from one’s own interpretation. For no such prophecy was ever brought forth by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” (2 Peter 1:20-21)  God was very clear on what those men of old were to do. “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Write in a book all the words I have spoken to you.” (Jeremiah 30:2-3)
It is beyond my comprehension to imagine everything that went into making sure God’s Word was accurately and painstakingly recorded for us to have.  It truly is God’s love letter to us!  “For everything that was written in the past was written for our instruction, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures, we might have hope.” (Romans 15:4)

Balaam’s Story: A Different Tactic
(Numbers 25)

The idea behind Judo is to use your enemy’s strength against them. You take their energy and redirect it to their own damage. There are few things more demoralizing than fighting or working really hard, but only causing damage to yourself. As Balaam’s story comes to a close, it does so with an amazing twist.  God has stopped him from speaking any kind of curse on God’s people. So Balaam gives advice behind the scenes to the Moabites.  He tells them to seduce Israel so they will bring a curse on themselves.  This tactic enables Balaam to bring a curse on Israel even though he was thwarted in his attempts to do it through prophecy. It illustrates the true nature of sin and how those who choose it bring their demise on themselves.  As we look at this story, let’s allow God to search our hearts for how we are treating the sin in our lives and the damage it is doing.

Join us Sunday mornings at 8:00 in Pastor Mark’s office to pray for that morning’s services. Contact Bob Baumiester for more information (rbaumiester@gmail.com).
