Hope Notes 03/30/2022

March 30, 2022
Hello Hoper ~
I grew up in the Catholic church and observing Lent was a big part of the season leading up to Easter. Lent is observed during the forty days before Easter. Giving something up (sacrificing) is a common practice during Lent. The idea is that giving up something you enjoy, like eating sweets or scrolling through social media, can be a reminder of Jesus’ sacrifice for us.  When I was little, it was all the playground talk – what are YOU giving up for Lent? The nuns would regularly ask us during class as well. I thought if I didn’t give something up, there would surely be grave consequences awaiting me!
Fast forward to current day. As a believer attending a non-denominational church, we don’t make observing Lent a big focus of the Easter season.  I no longer have nuns asking what I’m giving up, but I do see people talking about it on social media. That got me to thinking. If you do like the idea of sacrificing something during Lent, how about the precious commodity of your time?  Time spend scrolling, shopping, watching television etc., could be replaced with time spent connecting with God through prayer and devotions. I believe that the focus of the season is meant to be on spiritual growth and our relationship with God.  What better way to do that than to add something to our spiritual disciplines?
Jesus sacrificed Himself on Good Friday to bear the punishment for all our wrongdoings and offer us forgiveness. He was raised from the dead on Easter Sunday to give us an opportunity to have a relationship with God for eternity. There is nothing we could ever sacrifice that would compare. However, as we prepare to honor His ultimate sacrifice, let us remember these words of David: “Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the Lord”. (Psalm 4:5)  Whether you observe the season of Lent or not, what greater sacrifice than to submit one’s whole life and actions to the will of God!

Balaam’s Story: Doing Right, Wanting Wrong
Numbers 22:14-35 | COMMUNION

Fictional stories of spies can be truly exciting.  An agent pretends to be the target’s friend and gets close to them, but all of their words and actions are just a disguise because their true intention is to bring harm to the one they are getting close to. The story often revolves around the tension of whether the spy will be successful and avert whatever danger is trying to be avoided.  Or if somehow, the spy will be found out and his true motivation will be uncovered. These are fun tales to read, but we would probably not want to live them. So why then do we try to play spiritual games with God? People try to ‘be a good person’, but they’re actually just covering up the stuff they know is wrong by trying to balance it out with good. Or Christians try to focus on the stuff they think they do well and overlook the places where they are living in disobedience to the Lord. Do we think we can fool God?  Balaam didn’t, and neither can we.

If you’re volunteering on a Sunday morning, whether its greeting, HopeKids!, in the sound booth, etc., please join us for a team prayer huddle! We want to gather together everyone who is serving that morning to pray for the services. Meet at 8:15 in GoZone 2.

Join us Sunday mornings at 8:00 in Pastor Mark’s office to pray for that morning’s services. Contact Bob Baumiester for more information (rbaumiester@gmail.com).

1 Thessalonians 5:14-15
And we urge you brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.  Make sure nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.
