Hope Notes 03/23/2022

March 23, 2022

Hello Hoper ~
St. Patrick’s Day was last week and, as it always does, it reminds me of a fear I had for a bit as a child.  After I was tucked into bed at night, I would be certain that there was a leprechaun hiding in my closet just waiting to come out and get me.  I have no idea how I came to believe that leprechauns were dangerous, but nonetheless, that fear prompted me to tie the handles of my closet together with my jump rope.  It sounds so ridiculous to me as an adult, but it was very real as a child.  Another fear I had was that a wolverine was scratching at my second floor bedroom window trying to get in.  (Please don’t judge poor little Lois!)  And bless her heart, my mom didn’t even TRY to persuade me that it was actually impossible for a wolverine to be at my window.  Rather, she simply went out to the yard and ‘scared him away’!  Had she known about the evil leprechaun stalking me from my closet, I’m sure she would have done something similar.  Adults (especially parents) have such power to alleviate the fears of their children.
Our heavenly Father has all that and more!  We are His children and He wants us to know that we need not be afraid.  He tells us in Isaiah 41:10 (GNT), “Do not be afraid–I am with you! I am your God–let nothing terrify you! I will make you strong and help you; I will protect you and save you.”  He is WITH us.  No matter what we fear or what we face, we can rest in the assurance that God is with us.  He is our protector.  Both Psalm 61 and 91 speak about Him being our refuge (61:3, 91:2), our safe place (61:3, 91:2), and being protected under the shelter of His wings (61:4, 91:4).  I find Psalm 91:4-5 especially comforting.  “His faithful promises are your armor and protection. Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night…”  How my little five year old self would have loved those verses!  Leprechauns and wolverines be gone!  If anyone reading this is feeling overwhelmed by any kind of fear, I would suggest reading both of those Psalms in full. My prayer is that your fear would be dissolved and replaced by the peace of His ‘faithful promises and protection’.
In the shelter of His wings – Lois

SPIRITUAL CARE  SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE:
Balaam’s Story: Wanting God’s Power (Numbers 22:1-13)
Have you ever felt like someone wanted to use you?  For whatever reason, you got the sense that they wanted what you could do for them, but weren’t interested in you or your well-being at all. Maybe you didn’t notice it at first, or you stayed oblivious until after they got what they wanted and were on their way.  But it always hurts. Along those lines, we’re going to see a story today begin with some powerful people deciding they want to get God’s power to work for them. But they don’t want God. So they try to hire a prophet to ‘force’ God to use His power for their benefit. We’ll see this as the start of Balaam’s story.  There are some important elements included in this part of the story that give us hints as what we studied last week.  But our focus for this morning is noticing how people (including us!) often go to get God’s power with no interest in getting Him.
