Hope Notes 03/16/2022

March 16, 2022

Hello Hoper ~
I’m writing this on the weekend that we spring ahead one hour to Daylight Savings Time (DST). Parents of young children, I hear your cries of frustration!  Getting a child back on track sleep wise is often no easy task. Why do we even do this? Simply put, DST was begun in order to save energy and make better use of daylight. While researching DST, I found that most sources site 1918 as the official start.  However, I propose that our Heavenly Father had His own version of DST documented in Joshua 10:12-14 (NLT)! “On the day the LORD gave the Israelites victory over the Amorites, Joshua prayed to the LORD in front of all the people of Israel. He said, ‘Let the sun stand still over Gibeon, and the moon over the valley of Aijalon.’ So the sun stood still and the moon stayed in place until the nation of Israel had defeated its enemies…….The sun stayed in the middle of the sky, and it did not set as on a normal day. There has never been a day like this one before or since, when the LORD answered such a prayer. Surely the LORD fought for Israel that day!”  I find this such a fascinating fact.  I love knowing that God has that much power and control over the universe that He made.  Right from the very beginning, in Genesis 1:3, He creates night and day. “…..And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.”  I suppose we could get into a long discussion about the first Roman calendars and how time was organized, but all I really care about is the fact that God is ultimately the Keeper of all time.  He created it and He can do what He wants with it.  Time is His. “Both day and night belong to you; you made the starlight and the sun.” (Psalm 74:16 NLT)  Personally, I do wish we could stick with one time frame for the entire year. Obviously I will be following federal law and be changing my clocks with the rest of you.  But more importantly, I will be following the One who made time to begin with!
Serving the God who made the sun stand still! – Lois

Balaam’s Story: Big Picture
(2 Peter 2:15; Jude 11; Deut 23:3-6; Josh. 24:9-10; Num. 31:16; Rev. 2:14; Num. 31:7-8; Josh. 13:22; Micah 6:3-5)
Over the next few weeks, we’re going to be taking an abbreviated look at a famous story in the history of Israel: the story of Balaam.  If you haven’t heard of Balaam, you might recognize one of the most shocking parts of this story. Balaam’s donkey actually talks to him.  We’ll see why God used this almost unbelievable method of communicating with a prophet. And we’ll take a journey through this story to see what God did and what Balaam wanted to do.  If we just started with the narrative in Numbers, we might be confused (until we got to the end) about who Balaam was and why this story is included. So we’re going to take our first week and look at all of the other places in Scripture that refer to this story and what they tell us about the big picture.  This is not only a way we can understand this story, but it is also a way that we work through to a better understanding of Scripture.  Balaam presented himself as a ‘good guy’ but was in fact driven by money and power. God sees and holds back Balaam from cursing His people, but in the end, Balaam finds a way to bring devastation to Israel anyway.

If you’re volunteering on a Sunday morning, whether its greeting, HopeKids!, in the sound booth, etc., please join us for a team prayer huddle! We want to gather together everyone who is serving that morning to pray for the services. Meet at 8:15 in GoZone 2.

Join us Sunday mornings at 8:00 in Pastor Mark’s office to pray for that morning’s services. Contact Bob Baumiester for more information (rbaumiester@gmail.com).

We offer childcare and classes from our littlest Hopers to our 5th graders every Sunday morning at both the 8:30 & 10 services. Each classroom is staffed with friendly and enthusiastic teachers and helpers who are background checked to ensure your child’s safety. Our WonderZone! serves our youngest children, who are full of wonder about who God is! We have an infant room, one-year-old room, toddler classroom, and a pre-K classroom in order to serve each child with an age-appropriate curriculum. K-5th graders gather in the youth room for our opening service called The GoZone! where we GO for God, GO for growth and GO forever through worship, games and an interactive lesson through teaching and videos. The K-5th graders are then split up into age appropriate small groups to dive deeper into the lesson where they can share their own experiences and ask any questions they may have.
