Hope Notes 10/27/2021

October 27, 2021

Hello Hoper~
A few weeks ago at our deacon meeting, our opening devotion was on taming the tongue, especially in anger.  As more people shared about difficulties controlling anger, I began to feel somewhat like the odd man out.  You see, I have the opposite struggle; I have a really hard time expressing anger!  Anger in any form, even when it’s not directed at me, makes me super anxious.  I’m sure it comes from growing up in a house where there were loud and frequent outbursts of drunken anger. You’d think by now I’d have ‘outgrown’ it but no.  Funny story: I used to teach a youth Bible study.  The kids complained they could never tell if I was getting angry. One of the boys who’d known me for a long time drew a picture of my head, complete with steam coming out of my ears.  He would hold it up to alert the class that I was starting to simmer.
Scripture has guidelines when it comes to anger. “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” (Proverbs 15:1) My mom always did tell me I could catch more flies with honey than vinegar!  However, I fear I’ve taken her advice too far. Although that instruction has proven to be effective when dealing with all sorts of situations, there are times when a touch of righteous anger is called for. But I still can’t seem to let it out! And I definitely don’t want to ‘stir up anger’!  We know we are called to be “quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger…” (James 1:19) But nowhere does the Bible say we should NEVER get angry!
I have allowed fear to keep me from expressing my God given emotion of anger in a healthy manner at appropriate times. But God has not given me a spirit of fear (2Timothy 1:7).  I need to remember that and follow the proclamation found in Hebrews 13:6 – “So we can confidently say, The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”  Thank you for this mini therapy session brought to you courtesy of Hope Notes.

Saying No to Fear (or at least trying to!) – Lois

Free of Enemies
(Romans 12:18-20; Psalm 23:5-6; 2 Timothy 1:17; Matthew 5:38-48)

Whether you consider yourself a comic book or superhero fan or not, you’re at least somewhat familiar with Batman and the Joker. Their relationship has been portrayed in comics, TV shows, and movies for decades now. In multiple iterations of their story, the Joker tells Batman, “You need me.” The thinking is that their enmity gives Batman purpose, a reason to keep going. He’d be lost without his arch enemy. Too many Christians default to need an enemy. We may never say that out loud, but our lives tell a different story. We end up using the enmity of others as our fuel, but following Jesus calls us to a better way, a way without enemies.

Jude 17-19

“But, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold. They said to you, “In the last times, there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.” These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.”

If you’re following along with our bible reading plan, this month we’ll be reading Hebrews. Watch a synopsis here before you get started!
