Hope Notes 10/13/2021

October 17, 2021

Hello Hoper~
When our daughter Emily was about four, she wanted to stand in front of the congregation and sing during our time of worship.  The problem (apart from a four year old leading worship!) was that she wanted to sing The Little Mermaid. Not exactly a typical worship song!  Her little heart filled with joy whenever she sang that song and I supposed she wanted to share that feeling with the congregation. (Or she just liked the idea of getting to hold the microphone and belt out a song!)  As integral as the ‘right’ song is for worship, it isn’t the only component. We can have a song that points to Jesus, but if we are singing without a heart filled with God’s praises, then it is just singing and music.  In fact, singing isn’t the only way we can worship. So then, what else does worship look like?
Worship is a posture of acknowledging God’s greatness; His mercy, His grace, His power. Romans 12:1 GNT spells it out this way, “Offer yourselves as a living sacrifice to God, dedicated to his service and pleasing to him. This is the true worship that you should offer.” Jesus Himself lays it out in John 4:22-24 – “But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”  That means we understand not only who God is and what He does, but that we are surrendered to Him, allowing Him to reign supreme in our hearts and lives. Worship is a vital part of the believer’s life. The heart is always looking for something else to praise.  Only God is worthy of our praise. “You are wonderful, LORD, and you deserve all praise, because you are much greater than anyone can understand.” (Psalm 145:3 CEV)
We at Hope are blessed to have a worship team that is faithful to lead us in powerful worship songs every Sunday.  But let’s make it a point to remember that our worship doesn’t end there. Let’s worship our heavenly Father in ‘spirit and truth’ with our thoughts, our words, and our actions throughout the rest of the week as well.  And, although it is definitely not a worship song, if we hear The Little Mermaid, may it fill our hearts with the same kind of joy that sweet little four year old felt!

Worship Him Always – Lois

SPIRITUAL CARE  SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE
Set Free | Communion
(John 8:36; Gal. 5:1, 13; Romans 6:6-7, 20-23)

Can you imagine what it is like to NOT have your personal freedom? For most of us in this nation, all we can do is imagine. Certainly, those who are imprisoned have an understanding of what it means to lose their freedom. And there are other scenarios where Americans can have some sense of bondage. But there is a slavery that we’re going to look at today that is significantly more profound than any physical loss of freedom. This bondage is eternal and leads to a death beyond imagination. The reason many Christians don’t live alive is that they act like they are still in this bondage, when in fact, Jesus has set them free. What does it mean to be freed by Jesus and how does that bring us to life?  What can we do to live in that freedom, and thus come alive?

Even if you don’t have all this, you can pass along whatever info you do have to Emily DiLorenzo at emily@hopechristianfellowship.org by this Sunday, 10/17. FIGHT CLUB: Returning this Sunday!
Fight Club is BACK by popular demand – and this time we have lunch! Starting Sunday 10/17, after the second service, we will be getting back to the business of fighting temptation and defeating the sins that God has given us power over! Fight Club is a support group for men who want to find freedom from sexual sin. The struggle with pornography is all too common, and though the shame can keep us silent, we want to speak up and FIGHT BACK! Those of us who have met in Fight Club have seen the power of brothers standing beside one another and we want to invite you to that same strength and confidence. Any questions, contact Pastor Dan at danlein@hopechristianfellowship.org

  • “Crazy Love” Hope’s Singles; It’s crazy, if you think about it. The God of the universe loves us with a radical, unconditional, self-sacrificing love. And what is our typical response? We go to church, sing songs, and try not to cuss. God is calling you to a passionate love relationship with Himself. Because the answer to religious complacency isn’t working harder at a list of do’s and don’ts—it’s falling in love with God.
  • “Intentional Parenting” led by Dave & Leah Hallahan; (all adults) Whether you have toddlers, tweens, or teens it’s never too late to change the trajectory your kids are on and to start giving your family what it needs. You, yes you, are the single most influential person in your child’s life. Let’s start parenting with a purpose.
  • “Patterns of Evidence” led by John Smythe & Pastor Mark; (all adults) What is the validity of history found in the Bible?  Is it fact or fiction?  What does the hard historical evidence really have to say about the foundational story of the Old Testament: the Exodus out of Egypt?  Join us on a four week investigation searching for answers to these questions amid startling new finds which may change the scholastic views of history and the Bible.
