Hope Notes 10/06/2021

October 6, 2021

Hello Hoper~
“Rejoice at all times. Pray without ceasing. Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1Thessalonians 5:18) How many times have you heard or read this verse and thought, ‘Oh surely not! This can’t mean what it sounds like!’  I would say that every single Bible verse has purpose and meaning, placed there by the loving hand of God for our benefit.  “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17) And make no mistake, our God always means what He says.  He knew we would face struggles, disappointments, and fears. He knew we would have times of sorrow, anger, times when we would rail against the unfairness of it all. And in this verse He’s calling us to rise above our feelings. To rejoice. To pray. To give thanks no matter what. But you know what strikes me most about this verse?  Not what we’re called to do, but WHY we’re called to do so.  Because ‘this is God’s will for you’.  As believers, we can spend a lot of time wondering what God’s will is for our lives.  Of course, God has a specific plan and purpose that is unique for each one of us.  But in general, there are some overarching guidelines throughout Scripture where God reveals His will for us by showing us the God honoring lifestyle He desires for His people.  Micah 6:8 makes it very clear what God’s will for us is. “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” If you start looking through the Bible with the intent of picking out these gems, you will find many more examples than the two I’ve referenced here.  Sometimes I think we make knowing God’s will for us more complicated than it needs to be. We would do well to remember this important instruction found in Romans 12:2 – “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” His will is in His Word! And there’s no better way to renew our minds than by reading and applying His Word!

Transformed by the Cross – Lois

(Exodus 20:17; Proverbs 14:30; Hebrews 13:5; 1 Corinthians 7:27; Luke 9:57-62; Phil 4:10-13)

When you were a kid, and some adult told you that you’d had enough when you wanted more, didn’t it feel like they were just being cruel? We’re born with a part inside us that can’t understand any reason to hold back from what we like or what we want.  Of course, as we mature, we begin to understand that letting our desires run our lives can get us into big trouble. But we don’t always remember that lesson. Instead, we complain about what feels like lack and try to find motivation for working hard in chasing more.   More fun, more money, more control, more entertainment, more free time, more friends, more parties… MORE. But what if more is destroying us?  And what if believers don’t find the supernatural life Jesus gives us by chasing the stuff of this world?  Today we’re going to look at a simple principle that opens the door to life.

Proverbs 13:3

“Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.”

Now more than ever, it seems that people are in need of emotional support and help through the use of counseling. As the body of Christ, we want to help each other in this area by providing resources to get connected to a therapist. If you have had a positive experience with a counselor, we would love for you to refer them to us. We are interested in their contact information, if they are Christian/have a specialty area, if they accept insurance, and if they do telemed appointments. Even if you don’t have all this, you can pass along whatever info you do have to Emily DiLorenzo at emily@hopechristianfellowship.org by Sunday, 10/17. Resources will be shared shortly thereafter, so if you’re in need of a counselor, stay tuned!

FIGHT CLUB: Returning October 17th
Fight Club is BACK by popular demand – and this time we have lunch! Starting Sunday 10/17, after the second service, we will be getting back to the business of fighting temptation and defeating the sins that God has given us power over! Fight Club is a support group for men who want to find freedom from sexual sin. The struggle with pornography is all too common, and though the shame can keep us silent, we want to speak up and FIGHT BACK! Those of us who have met in Fight Club have seen the power of brothers standing beside one another and we want to invite you to that same strength and confidence. Any questions, contact Pastor Dan at danlein@hopechristianfellowship.org

  • “Crazy Love” Hope’s Singles; It’s crazy, if you think about it. The God of the universe loves us with a radical, unconditional, self-sacrificing love. And what is our typical response? We go to church, sing songs, and try not to cuss. God is calling you to a passionate love relationship with Himself. Because the answer to religious complacency isn’t working harder at a list of do’s and don’ts—it’s falling in love with God.
  • “Intentional Parenting” led by Dave & Leah Hallahan; (all adults) Whether you have toddlers, tweens, or teens it’s never too late to change the trajectory your kids are on and to start giving your family what it needs. You, yes you, are the single most influential person in your child’s life. Let’s start parenting with a purpose.
  • “Patterns of Evidence” led by John Smythe & Pastor Mark; (all adults) What is the validity of history found in the Bible?  Is it fact or fiction?  What does the hard historical evidence really have to say about the foundational story of the Old Testament: the Exodus out of Egypt?  Join us on a four week investigation searching for answers to these questions amid startling new finds which may change the scholastic views of history and the Bible.
