Hope Notes 09/29/2021

September 29, 2021

Hello Hoper~
My phone is set to vibrate along with the alert sound for a text.  For some reason, I seem to be able to ‘hear’ the vibration better than the sound! However, when the phone is in my back pocket, I can neither hear the sound OR the vibration.  (I’m old!)  I wondered why I kept missing texts; shouldn’t I at least be able to FEEL the vibration?  After years of this, I just recently figured out why.  That side of my butt is numb (sorry if that’s TMI) due to a failed back surgery.  No wonder I’ve been seemingly ignoring those texts!
It’s one thing to ignore a text message, either purposely or inadvertently. But how about ignoring God’s call on your life?  That’s a whole other matter!  I’m not even necessarily talking about a calling to ministry. (I think we all know what happened to Jonah when he refused God’s call to ministry,‘nuff said!)  For many of us, God’s calling is on a more basic level.  God calls us to a certain standard of behavior, to have right relationships, basically to live our lives in a way that brings glory to Him. Paul advises in Ephesians 4:1-2, “As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.”  I am humbled that I have even been given a calling from God at all!  We are called to obey God. To do this we need to be listening for God’s instructions, reading His Word for direction and then applying what we learn.  “But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.” (James 1:22)  When we seek God’s counsel, in His word, in His house, and in prayer with Him, and then do what He says to do, we can live life with enthusiasm and peace. When we don’t seek His counsel, when we ignore Him and plot our own path, our soul just isn’t right.
I think we would all do well to take heed God’s words to Israel in Proverbs 1:22-25, 28 – “But since you refuse to listen when I call and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand, since you disregard all my advice and do not accept my correction……..Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me.”   That’s enough to motivate me to do all I can in order to avoid missing or ignoring God’s call on my life. Oh and as for ignoring the text messages, I suppose I should also switch which back pocket I slip my phone into!
Heed His Call – Lois

Can desperation lead to life?
(John 4:43-53, Matthew 6:28-33, Psalm 42:1-3, John 15:5)

Times of desperation are not usually anything that we look forward to, hope for, or prioritize. The portrayal of a desperate person is not generally a positive one. In a world that emphasizes maintaining a picture of having things together, we never want to give the implication that we are desperate to be in a better spot. In John 4, Jesus interacts with a man who is desperate and looking for help. Join us this Sunday as we go through this passage to see how this man found life for himself and his family.

Proverbs 13:3

“Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.”

If you’re following along with our bible reading plan for this year, our next book to read is Proverbs.

Join us Sunday mornings at 8:00 in Pastor Mark’s office to pray for that morning’s services. Contact Bob Baumiester for more information (rbaumiester@gmail.com).    ANNOUNCEMENTS

Now more than ever, it seems that people are in need of emotional support and help through the use of counseling. As the body of Christ, we want to help each other in this area by providing resources to get connected to a therapist. If you have had a positive experience with a counselor, we would love for you to refer them to us. We are interested in their contact information, if they are Christian/have a specialty area, if they accept insurance, and if they do telemed appointments. Even if you don’t have all this, you can pass along whatever info you do have to Emily DiLorenzo at emily@hopechristianfellowship.org by Sunday, 10/17. Resources will be shared shortly thereafter, so if you’re in need of a counselor, stay tuned!

Are you listening to our podcast Hope Daily? Each weekday one of our staff members shares a short devotional thought to get your day started on the right foot. Listen on your commute to work or while you make breakfast at home! Subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or listen on our website.

FIGHT CLUB: Returning October 17th
Fight Club is BACK by popular demand – and this time we have lunch! Starting Sunday 10/17, after the second service, we will be getting back to the business of fighting temptation and defeating the sins that God has given us power over! Fight Club is a support group for men who want to find freedom from sexual sin. The struggle with pornography is all too common, and though the shame can keep us silent, we want to speak up and FIGHT BACK! Those of us who have met in Fight Club have seen the power of brothers standing beside one another and we want to invite you to that same strength and confidence. Any questions, contact Pastor Dan at danlein@hopechristianfellowship.org
