Hope Notes 08/18/2021

August 18, 2021

Hello Hoper~
The other day I saw a billboard along the road that said “Be what you were!” as an advertisement for an orthopedic practice.  I have to say, my immediate reaction was a hard NO. It set off such an impassioned reaction on such a gut level with me.  Not the reaction the doctors were going for, I’m sure! But I don’t want to be what or who I was before. Before I knew the love of our Savior. Before I became part of the family of God.  Before I had a life redeemed through Jesus’ death on the cross.  “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”  (2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT)
My old self is nothing I wish to revisit.  I don’t want to go back to my old ways of thinking or acting.  These things have been washed away by the blood of the Lamb. “Do not call to mind the former things; pay no attention to the things of old.” (Isaiah 43:18)  I didn’t simply decide to reinvent myself.  I did not inherit this new being.  Neither did God decide to just clean up my old nature. When I surrendered my life to Him, He created something entirely new. “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you…” (Ezekiel 36:26)  Why on earth would I want to return to a way of life that left me in charge; a self-serving life without God’s Word to turn to for guidance, without the wisdom of One who is greater than me, without the grace and mercy so freely offered to me, forgiveness for my sins, and the promise of life everlasting?  I cannot think of one reason. The new creation is a wondrous thing, formed in the mind of God and created by His power and for His glory.  If I was into defacing billboards with graffiti, I would make that roadside sign say this – Don’t be what you were; let God make you into who you were designed to be!”

Made New in Him – Lois

Read and Pray
(Psalm 1:2-3; 1 Thess. 5:17; Romans 10:17; John 17:17; Psalm 119:11, 105;
Ephesians 6:17; Acts 4:29-31; Ephesians 6:18; James 4:2-3)

Communication is the backbone of any relationship. When you’re in elementary school, and you have a crush on that cute classmate, you may not be able to figure out HOW to talk to them. But in any mature relationship, the ability to connect through conversation and understanding is at the very foundation of friendship or family or romance. With the Lord, it may seem more complicated because He’s not just a human like we are, so there’s the awe of His greatness. And of course, we don’t talk to Him face to face like we do with people. But knowing God is a lot more like knowing other people than we realize. The two basic parts of our communicating with Him are reading and prayer. We’ll look at how to do both of these, and what they do for our lives with our Lord!

Romans 8:14-15

“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.”

Paul tells us in Philippians that one way to move away from anxiety and worry is to lay our concerns before God with thanksgiving. This isn’t exactly intuitive, but think through the things that have you worried this week. Give them to God and share with him what about those situations you have to be thankful for. Where you cannot find a reason to be thankful, ask God for faith to trust that he is working it together for your good.

Join us Sunday mornings at 8:00 in Pastor Mark’s office to pray for that morning’s services. Contact Bob Baumiester for more information (rbaumiester@gmail.com).

  • The Comparison TrapLadies Only (Led by Dana Ott) The temptation to compare is as near as your next chat with a friend, trip to the store, or scroll down your favorite social media platform. And whether you come out on top or come up lacking, there is simply no winning in comparison. It’s actually a trap. This 4-week study includes a devotional book which has pages to complete each day as well as questions we’ll answer each Wednesday night. Hope you can join us!
  • Yard Sign ManifestoAdults All Ages (Led by Pastor Dave) You’ve seen the yard signs…In this house we believe: Science is Real, Black Lives Matter, Gay Rights are the New Civil Rights…or something to that extent. These statements compose what Rebecca McLaughlin calls, The Secular Creed. Living by this creed is supposed to ensure the good life for both ourselves and others. We’ll dissect four of those statements and see what we can affirm, what we cannot endorse, and see how ultimately it is faithfulness to Christianity that looks like Christ that is the surest way to diversity, equality and transforming-love.
  • You and Me ForeverCouples Married 10 Years or Less When you promised your spouse “until death do us part” you promised faithfulness for your entire life. But as followers of Christ, you will live an eternal life. Married couples cannot allow lesser things to distract from their marriage, but they also must not allow marriage to distract from eternal things. In this study, you’ll be challenged to view your marriage in light of eternity.
  • Crazy LoveHope’s Single Adults (Led by Jess St. Petery & Rick Mounce) It’s crazy, if you think about it. The God of the universe loves us with a radical, unconditional, self-sacrificing love. And what is our typical response? We go to church, sing songs, and try not to cuss. God is calling you to a passionate love relationship with Himself. Because the answer to religious complacency isn’t working harder at a list of do’s and don’ts—it’s falling in love with God.

Plus HopeKids! programs for nursery through 5th grade, and Hope Youth bible study for 6th-12th grades! Truly a night for the whole family.

Many of you filled out a volunteer form this summer and helped fill in the gaps for lots of our ministries! We are so thankful. Yet we still have a handful of areas that still need helping hands. Please pray and consider if you might be the right fit for one of these ministries:

Be the first smile that someone sees at Hope! Looking for friendly faces to greet everyone who steps through our doors and hand them a Sunday Post! Contact Deb Caranci at debcaranci@gmail.com.

NURSERY SPLIT: Coming this fall!
Our HopeKids! WonderZone is growing! With so many new babies at Hope, we are thrilled to be reopening the Nursery 2 room! Beginning September 5th, Nursery 1 will be open to all 0-12 month olds, and Nursery 2 will be open for all 1 year olds! In order to keep both rooms open and running smoothly, we are in need of a few more volunteers to serve on the rotation. If you are interested in serving in either of our nurseries, we would love to have you on our team!  Please contact Kara May at karamay@hopechristianfellowship.org.

Our Sunday morning program for K-5th graders meets in-person at the 8:30 & 10:00 services.

Instead of the livestream, our GoZone kids who can’t make it to church will have their VERY OWN virtual experience designed specifically to be as accessible and exciting as possible for children at home. Make sure you’re following HopeKids Ministries on Facebook so your child can watch!
