Hope Notes 07/21/2021

July 21, 2021

Hello Hoper~
DISCLAIMER:  Apologies in advance – Let’s see how many times I can say the word ‘family’ before this post is done.  Or not.
I may only have a few blood relatives, but what I do have a friend who is truly a sister to me.  Born just one year after me, our mothers were friends, and our ‘older-by-13-years’ brothers were friends.  We have been intertwined as family so long that I forget we aren’t really related! If only our moms were alive to see how the relational legacy has continued on through the generations.  The other day, as Aunt and Auntie, we got to discussing how our children are cousins and now THEIR children are second cousins.  As we meandered along the genealogy trail, I suddenly remembered none of us actually share DNA. We had a good laugh over that and decided how, if you say something enough times, it becomes ‘true’.  In that moment I decided DNA doesn’t matter one bit; we ARE family and no one can tell me any different!  In fact, we are the best kind of family – Chosen. My own personal little family includes my husband, daughter, son-in-law, and grandson.  Chosen.  Put together by God.  When Scripture tells us that “God sets the lonely in families” (Psalm 68:6), it could be any kind of family. My extended and personal chosen families are just two examples.  Another that comes to mind is our church family. For me, the relationships formed there fill in any remaining gaps left by nonexistent blood relatives. Our church family is part of an even bigger family – the family of God.  This is the one we were designed to belong to. No matter how big or how little your family here on earth is, you can know that you are His child and therefore belong to His.  But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God…” (John 1:12)  One of my favorite verses that highlights the privilege and favor that goes along with this is found in 1 John 3, “See what kind of love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God…” Whether or not my earthly family will ever lavish that kind of love on me, I am so grateful that our God does.  And that I am a part of His family.  And that He knows our needs and our desires often before we do.  And meets them according to His will.  Beyond thankful for all the families He has placed me into.

Part of the Family of God – Lois

Love Like Crazy
VBS Opening

(John 13:34-25; 1 Cor 13:1-3; John 3:16; Philippians 2:5-8; Hebrews 4:15; 1 Peter 2:24)
If you’ve ever been around a young couple newly in love, you know how crazy love can make you act. The great thing is that the couple doesn’t realize they are doing anything strange; for them, it is just as natural as breathing. Love makes us do stuff and changes how we act. For believers, that is a great way to practically think about loving others. Jesus told us to love our neighbor and Paul tells us it is the main thing for Christians. Hopefully, we are already loving people like Jesus loves them.  But today, let’s kick off VBS by asking ourselves if we have room to grow in loving others.  Can we love people like crazy?

Colossians 4:6

“Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.”

What difficult conversations have you been avoiding? Ask God to lay them out before you and fill you with his Spirit that you may enter them graciously.

Join us Sunday mornings at 8:00 in Pastor Mark’s office to pray for that morning’s services. Contact Bob Baumiester for more information (rbaumiester@gmail.com).
