Hope Notes 06/16/2021

June 16, 2021

Hello Hoper~
Human beings are fickle things.  We change our minds, we break promises; we can be temperamental and unpredictable.  I recently had to retract I vow I’d made to never read on an electronic device.  Although I love the smell and feel of a book in my hands, the pandemic caused my library to close and I was suffering from severe book withdrawal!  I found myself getting the Kindle app (oh the shame) and reading all the free books I could during the last 15 months.  And you know what?  It wasn’t so bad!  In fact, I actually liked the fact that I could read in bed without having to turn on a light.  I’m happily perusing the book aisles at my local library once again, but having that Kindle option as a backup is wonderful!  Another time I had to eat my words was when I finally switched from film to digital photography.  Oh how I scorned taking the ‘easy’ way out and using digital images and editing them to perfection!  I swore you’d always find me using film, sniffing the chemicals in the darkroom, and shooting print ready pictures.  Alas, the disappearing film industry left me no choice but to make the switch.  And again, guess what? I sheepishly had to admit I loved the ease of digital images.  I do still believe in composing your picture skillfully enough to not require a ton of editing; I haven’t completely ‘switched teams’!
The above examples are but a few of the many times I’ve changed my mind on something.  Our God, however, does not change His mind. God never goes back on His promises or tells us something one day and something different the next. Unlike us, God always can be trusted to keep His Word.  The Bible tells us that God, “does not lie or change his mind; for he is not a human being, that he should change his mind” (1 Samuel 15:29).  In other words, there is no way for God to be fickle like us. He is not a human being.  He is an eternal being, without beginning or end.  Numbers 23:19 puts it another way, reminding us that “God is not a man, that He should lie, or a son of man, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?”  I think of all the empty words we utter without actions to back them up.  Promises made that somehow never come to be. People we thought we knew well turn out to be someone different than the image they presented to us.  How thankful am I that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8)  Think of all those we know whose values and morals change with the wind.  James 1:17 is a comforting verse: “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”  I hope and pray that the times I find myself changing an opinion will only ever be on such insignificant things like paper vs electronic books, or film vs digital images!

Standing Firm on His Word- Lois

HopeKids! Takeover
Each year, we take one Sunday and give our morning service over to our kids’ ministries.  As VBS preparation gets in full swing, as the school year comes to a close, and as we celebrate Father’s Day together, we’re going to enjoy this morning as a church family.  Our Children’s Pastor, Ryan Moreno, has put together a morning where we can get a taste of what our kids enjoy each Sunday morning.  And we can be reminded of how vital our ministry to these young people truly is. We place incredible importance on reaching the next generation, so come and give your full support this morning.  And pray with us as we return to normal from Covid shutdown stuff and as we prepare to reach out to our community through our amazing VBS program in July!

1 Corinthians 15:57-58

But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.  Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Paul encourages us to stand firm because of the victory we have in Jesus. Where does life feel shaky and unstable for you? Ask God to show you where your solid ground is.

Join us Sunday mornings at 8:00 in Pastor Mark’s office to pray for that morning’s services. Contact Bob Baumiester for more information (rbaumiester@gmail.com).
