Hope Notes 06/02/2021

June 2, 2021

Hello Hoper~
Has a song on your car’s stereo or a store’s loudspeaker ever caught you off guard and brought back a tidal wave of memories?  It’s like the music serves as a soundtrack for a mental movie that begins playing in our heads. I don’t know why some songs elicit strong memories and others do not, but all I have to do is hear a few a few bars of Who’ll Stop the Rain by Credence Clearwater Revival and I am instantly transported back to my high school bedroom.  I can feel the warm air, see the curtains billowing in the breeze, smell the ever present incense burning (come on it was 1972!), and recall the emotions of that particular day.  I have the same kind of experience every time I hear Come, Now is the Time to Worship.  That was the very first song I heard from our worship team on our first Sunday at Hope, back when we were meeting at the Friends of Israel.  I can recall the smell of coffee in the room, holding hands with my husband and crying my way through the whole worship set because I knew we were exactly where God wanted us to be.  Those are much more powerful memories than the smell of incense and warm summer wind.  Worship music has the capability to evoke very strong emotions and allow us to come into the presence of God in a beautiful way. If you experienced our Morning of Worship last Sunday, you know exactly what I’m talking about. I’m so grateful for the faithfulness and dedication of our worship team.  That ministry requires a lot of personal sacrifice in order to stand before us and humbly serve as they lead us in worship. “Serve the LORD with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!” (Psalm 100:2)  I am thankful for all they do that allows us to do as instructed in Psalm 95:1-2. “Come, let us sing to the LORD!  Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come to him with thanksgiving. Let us sing psalms of praise to him.”  It may be an instruction in Scripture, but it truly feels like a privilege! Thank you, team, for providing us with that opportunity.

Appeal (Numbers 14:5-20)
Prayer is a way that we make an appeal to the Lord.  Does He hear us?  And how would we know?  Maybe we use our experience in making appeals to other people as a guide to what will happen when we ask God for something we desperately need. This part of the story shows that assuming people respond to appeals like the Lord responds would be a mistake.  Moses asks Israel to reconsider their rebellion in fear, but Israel refuses to turn away. That causes Moses to make an appeal to God.  It doesn’t mean that Moses was foolish to ask the Israelites to change their minds, even though they didn’t. Likewise, we learn that asking God to turn away from what is fair, and to show mercy and grace instead is not a wasted effort.  We make appeals to both people and to the Lord.  From what we read here, let’s be good at doing both.

1 Corinthians 15:57-58

But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.  Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Join us in reading the book of 1 Samuel. For some background information, check out an overview of the book from the Bible Project here!
