Hope Notes 2/10/2021

February 10, 2021

Hello Hoper!
I’m reading the book of John along with our church (at least I hope you are; if not jump in there today!) and stopped to ponder on John 5:39-40.  “You study the Scriptures, because you think that in them you will find eternal life. And these very Scriptures speak about me! Yet you are not willing to come to me in order to have life.”  Then my eyes were drawn to a note I had scribbled alongside this verse back in 2001 (yes I date my scribbles, don’t judge me!). “We are not asked to believe the Bible, but to believe the One the Bible reveals.” (Oswald Chambers)
John 6:29 gives further weight to this. “The work of God is this; to believe in the one He has sent.” If only I had applied this mindset as a new believer!  Before I would commit to getting saved, I remember thinking that first I had to read, understand, and AGREE with everything the Bible said before I could give my life to Christ. It’s actually quite the opposite.  Only once we have surrendered our lives to Christ does the Holy Spirit ‘remove the veil’ from our eyes so that we can better understand Scripture. “But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.” (2Corinthians 3:16)  And then I resisted reading the Bible because as a baby Christian I just couldn’t make myself believe everything that was in there. I knew I believed in Jesus and the saving work He did for me, but you have to admit – looking through the eyes of a nonbeliever or brand new believer, Scripture is full of some pretty crazy ‘stories’ from start to finish!

  • Basically the whole book of Genesis.
  • Elisha gets called baldy by some rowdy teens and they get mauled by bears. (2 Kings 2)
  • Balaam talks to his donkey…….and the donkey talks back! (Numbers 22-23)
  • Samson kills 1000 men with the jawbone of a donkey. (Judges 15)
Miracles of Jesus found in the Gospels.
  • Need I mention the book of Revelation?

Those are just a few examples, but I think you get my drift.  How much easier it would have been for me to simply allow myself to rest in the arms of Jesus, trusting that He would change my heart, remove the veil, and bring Scripture to life in a way I’d never experienced! My only ‘job’ was to read the Bible and allow it to show me more about who God is and how He interacts with His creation.  To search the Scriptures and ask myself what they were telling me about God rather than focusing on what I saw as the improbability of specifics.  If you find yourself struggling along these lines, I would say just keep reading and asking God to reveal Himself to you.  There is no timeline for conviction.  The Bible is God’s gift to us.  A way for us to get to know Him personally.  Just start!  And lucky for you we’re reading John this month; a great book to begin with!

Glowing From God’s Presence

(Exodus 34:29-35; 2 Corinthians 3:7-16)
If you were to move from one region of the country to another, you would probably notice a difference in the accent of those in your new location from what you’re used to hearing. At first, it would be quite obvious, but over time, you’d get used to it. In fact, if you live in another place long enough, you would probably start to adopt the accent of your new home for yourself. Being around these new people would have an imprint on how you talk. In fact, the people around you have an impact on you in many ways. Some are visible and obvious, while others are more internal and a little harder to recognize. Being around the Lord has an impact on you as well.  As Moses talked with God, his skin took on a supernatural glow. This kind of freaked out the Israelites, so Moses covered his face in front of them. But later, the veil covered something else up. Is God’s presence changing you? Are you in His presence often enough that it is evident to those around you?

James 1:16-17
“Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”

What circumstances or situations are you going through that you find difficult to see a “good and perfect gifts”? Ask God to give you faith to trust him even when  your circumstances say you shouldn’t.
