Hope Notes 1/6/2021

January 6, 2021

Hello Hoper! Some years are best viewed in the rearview mirror.  I dare to say that most of us would feel 2020 was one of those years!  I know there are many who could not WAIT to say goodbye to 2020. However, there is nothing magical about 2021. True, it’s a new year, new president, new vaccine……I can hear what you’re thinking.  But our hope must not rest in a year with different digits.  Our hope rests in God alone.  “Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.” (Psalm 62:5)  Hebrews 6:19 assures us, “This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls.”  We would do well to remember that.  We must not place our hope and our trust in whatever it is we believe this new year will bring us. Not the new president.  Not anything that man can do. “It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.” (Psalm 118:88 KJV)  It is always better to put our trust in the Lord. It is always better to rely on God as our ultimate source of hope in everything we do. Despite man’s best intentions, man is limited in wisdom, love, power, and ability. We are also warned about this in Jeremiah 15:5 – “This is what the LORD says: “Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans, who rely on human strength and turn their hearts away from the LORD.” (NLT) If that is what our sovereign God says about trusting anything other than Him, I FOR SURE want to do all I can to avoid it! If you’re wondering how to place your trust in a God you cannot see, a good place to start is by seeking Him through Scripture. The Bible is filled with examples of His trustworthiness, His promises kept, His love and mercy.  As a matter of fact, doing this will not only help you to trust Him in 2021, it will transform you with effects that reach far into eternity.  We have a promise in Jeremiah 29:13 – “You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.”  There you have it.  All you need do is seek Him.  He promises you will find Him. ”May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13) Wishing all my Hopers a year filled with His joy, His hope, and His holy peace.

January 10 – Breaking God’s Tablets (Exodus 32:7-20)

Do you know someone who can never bring themselves to apologize? There are probably many different reasons that people struggle to say they are sorry. But if you’re the one who has been hurt, this refusal is almost a second betrayal. We can forgive people for being less than perfect.  However, if that person wants to try to pretend they didn’t do anything wrong, it creates a second hurdle for us.  Perhaps they think that they can ignore their wrong and it will just cease to exist.  Or maybe they don’t like that they are supposed to adhere to some moral rules.  In any case, when someone crosses a line and refuses to make things right, it causes serious damage to the relationship.  Israel has betrayed the Lord by building a golden calf as an idol and essentially turning their back on the true and living God. We’ll see the effects of this, but also the foundation that opened the door for a remedy.

2 Corinthians 5:7
“For we live by faith, not by sight.”

Ask God to show you where you’ve been relying on your own strength, knowledge, and resources rather than walking by faith.

Each year we typically put out a read-through-the bible plan to encourage you to get into God’s word as part of your new year’s goals. This year we’ll be reading a different book of the bible each month. For January we’re starting with Matthew!
We will be resuming our study in Ephesians TONIGHT at 7:00pm on livestream only. We hope you can tune-in on Facebook or YouTube! Bible study will remain virtual for the month of January.
