Hope Notes 09/30/2020

September 30, 2020

Dear Friends of Hope ~
I think it’s safe to say…….we all have ‘that’ friend.  You know the one I mean.  The one you love but who requires a great deal of support. The one who seems to have a never ending hamster wheel of troubles.  The one who continuously asks for advice but never heeds it. The one who always asks you to pray for them but doesn’t bother to go to the Lord for themselves.  The one you one day realize has been lamenting the same situation for years but has yet to take to heart any of the ‘words of wisdom’ you have doled out.  Gets really frustrating, doesn’t it?  Gets old fast!  But what about us?  Do we do the same thing to our heavenly Father?  The only One who’s advice and words of wisdom truly matter, the only One who actually knows exactly what we need to do. “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”  (James 1:5)  He shares His wisdom with us through His Word.  So we need to be reading it.  And then following through with what it says to do. “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.” (James 1:22-24)  And yet, I confess that there are times when I seek His wisdom and then reject it because I don’t like the answer He is giving me.  Or the answer doesn’t seem like it could possibly lead to a positive result. But I need to trust Him. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6) Friends,I am preaching to myself when I say He will not lead us astray.  He has a plan for a good life for us.  Even though we may have to go through some struggles to get there, we can have the comfort of knowing every single thing is a part of God’s master plan for us.  How many times do we ask Him to show us what to do or where to go and then we don’t want to go there?  What’s the bottom line? Don’t be ‘that friend’ and don’t ask the Lord to guide your footsteps if you’re not willing to move your feet in the direction He points you!
Seeking His Wisdom,
October 4 – Better Life (John 14:6; Luke 12:15; Matt 19:16-22; John 10:10)
Are you heading for a better life? What if you knew that you could already have it? We use the word life to describe our experiences and the totality of our feel in life. For so many, the life they are now living is not the life they hope to live.  Everyone has to deal with circumstances and challenges, but somehow, we all expect life to be more fulfilling and satisfying than what we’re experiencing.  We look at the lives we think others are having and get jealous of what we think we’re missing. The more hopeful among us strive to get to that life.  But Jesus says that the life we can have is better than the life we can make.  He tells us that the satisfying life we wish for is one we’re given through Him. He is the life.  Plus, He puts it in the present tense, not the future tense.  That suggests that He can be our life NOW. Jesus offers us a better life… but are we living it?

“Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”

Wouldn’t you love to have this annual event to look forward to? We’d love to, but we need a minimum amount of cars so please register by this Sunday 10/4 (sign up here!) We’re hoping to have our annual Trunk or Treat this year on Sunday, October 25th from 3:00-5:00pm.

CHURCH BUSINESS MEETING: Wednesday, October 7th at 7:00pm
Join us for a  full update on the spending work for the HVAC and building projects. The elders will share the progress as well as the many adjustments we’ve had to make along the way. Plus, there are new projects we’re tackling! So we’re calling for all those who are a part of Hope to join us if you can as we move forward together.

HELP NEEDED: The Marriage Course
We are looking for several volunteers that would be willing to help set up, serve dinner, and clean up for our Friday night Marriage Course (see times and dates below). You don’t need to be available for the entire series, even just one or two nights would be fantastic! We’d love to ask older teens, young adults, single adults, or those who may be unable to attend with their spouse to consider lending a hand for an evening! If you think you may be able to help there will be a brief meeting following the 10:00am service this Sunday, or you can contact Dana Ott at danaott@hopechristianfellowship.org.

FREE FALL CLEANUP! October 24th
Our Young Adults are looking to serve Hopers and community by providing a day of free help (think yard work, housework, light manual labor.) THE MARRIAGE COURSE: Deadline to sign-up is THIS SUNDAY!
This small group is designed to help couples invest in their relationship and build a strong marriage. Through the seven weeks this course will cover: Strengthening Connection, The Art of Communication, Resolving Conflict, The Power of Forgiveness, The Impact of Family, Good Sex and Love in Action. There is a $100 cost per couple. This cost includes dinner, dessert, and beverages each week and course materials. Think of it as your weekly date night! Sign-up here!

FIGHT CLUB: 8-week Small Group, Tuesdays from 6p-7p, starting Oct 6th
This small group is designed for men to unite in their struggle against pornography. Pornography is an epidemic, affecting over 80% of men, twisting our ideas of sexuality and killing us in the process. But there is hope; James 5:16 says,  “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective”. No judgement, no condemnation, only healing and support is on offer. We seek to “Carry each other’s burdens” (Gal 6:2), and in that way all feel a little lighter. Using Tim Chester’s Closing the Window: Steps to Living Porn Free we will be looking at the ways we can both spiritually and practically fight The Fight against pornography. Sign-up here!
YOUTH GROUP: Sundays at 6:00pm
Our goal at Hope is to provide a space where young believers and seekers can grow in their faith, and find that they have a loving and welcoming place in the family of God. Students from 6th to 12th grade are invited to join us for games, snacks, and the Word of God as we engage in fellowship and seek to grow in our relationship with our savior. There will be some changes amidst the pandemic, including bagged snacks and youth group outdoors! If you have any questions, please contact our Youth Pastor, Daniel Lein, at danlein@hopechristianfellowship.org

OCTOBER 6TH: What I’ve learned so far about… Prayer
Paul says to pray without ceasing. Jesus says anything we pray according to his name, we have received it already. Yet, for many, prayer can be a difficult thing. Add to that it’s a deeply personal thing, so we don’t often talk about it and those who struggle are left alone. Let’s learn from each other. What have you learned about prayer? What works for you? What definitely doesn’t work for you? How can we think about prayer differently to cultivate a healthier prayer life?

ATTENTION PARENTS: Kid’s Christmas Program
We’re gaging the interest in having our kid’s Christmas program this year (for both the 2-5 year olds and elementary aged kids!) This is typically a program we never skip, and we are hoping that we can make it happen for Christmas 2020 in spite of all that’s happened this year! If your child would be interested in participating please email Pastor Matt (mattrussell@hopechristianfellowship.org) by October 18th.

SUNDAY MORNINGS: Livestreaming & In-Person!
We are excited to reopen HopeKids! Ministries at our 8:30 and 10:00 services. For more detailed information, please visit our Post Quarantine Protocol Sheet. If you’re unable to join us in-person, your kids can still watch GoZone on Facebook & YouTube!
