Hope Notes 09/02/2020

September 2, 2020

Dear Friends of Hope ~
The most precious thing you can give someone is your time, because you can never get it back.  When you don’t think about getting it back, when you’re not begrudgingly giving it, then you’ve given it in love.  We give our time to others when we serve them.  And isn’t that what we are called to do?  We model the role of servant after our Lord Jesus Christ. “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45)  I remember a conversation with my cousin, who was horrified that we would be willing to act as servants.  She thought it was so degrading.  I could not convince her otherwise.  I suppose she is not alone in her thinking; the word servant has been used to denote a person of lower standing.  But believers are taught the exact opposite; the Highest King of Heaven came to earth to serve others.  How could we then consider being a servant a lowly position?   We are privileged to be distributors, if you will, of God’s grace and love here on earth.  And He gives us the means to do so. “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.”  (1 Peter 4:10)    Not only that, but He reminds us that we are actually ministering to Him when we take care of others!  “And the King will say, I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!” (Matthew 25:40)  Talk about an incentive!  It can be hard to give of our time; we seem to have so little of it ‘left over’.  Why not consider your time as a tithe and give to others and the Lord FIRST rather than waiting to see if you have any left over to spare?  Philippians 2:3-4 gives us a good guideline as to how we are to live: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”  If we can consistently carve out time to serve without vainly waiting for the ‘leftovers’ and begin to put other’s needs first on a regular basis, we just might find that we are able to give that most precious gift, our time, in genuine love rather than obligation.
Serving in Love (or at least trying to)……
Rough Year? Make It Better!
Of course we’ve had a rough year! In the span of a few short months, we have faced circumstances, restrictions, upheaval, and overwhelming adaptations that we could have never imagined or believed.  But we believe that hope is real.  Our good Creator wants us to have better than many of us have experienced. This is not a fairy tale or a wish.  It is a reality that we can find in Jesus.  Many of our moments of frustration and despair come from losing our grip on the hope we’ve found in Jesus. So let’s take a look at Jesus’ words and see what He promises we’ll find in knowing Him!

Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.

YOUTH GROUP: Youth Group Starts back up THIS Sunday, September 6th at 6pm!
Our goal at Hope is to provide a space where young believers and seekers can grow in their faith, and find that they have a loving and welcoming place in the family of God. Students from 6th to 12th grade are invited to join us for games, snacks, and the Word of God as we engage in fellowship and seek to grow in our relationship with our savior. There will be some changes amidst the pandemic, including bagged snacks and youth group outdoors! If you have any questions, please contact our Youth Pastor, Daniel Lein, at danlein@hopechristianfellowship.org
SEPTEMBER 15TH: What I’ve Learned So Far About… Sharing Jesus
Jesus has called of his believers to “go and make disciples.” What this looks like has changed over time and is dependent on cultural and personal preferences. What does it mean for you to share Jesus? What have you learned is effective? What have you tried or seen that doesn’t seem to be working? How do we get better at it?
