Hope Notes 06/24/2020

June 24, 2020

Dear Friends of Hope ~
Michael and I have always loved to go on drives together.  We explore the picturesque countryside and have some of our best conversations on these rides.  Over the years we have traversed most of South Jersey.  I showed him a list of scenic drives to take that was put out during quarantine.  I’m not kidding – every single SJ one he proclaimed, “We’ve already been there”.  He just proved my running joke that he knows every road in the southern part of our state!  I also fully believe he has a GPS located in his brain.  No matter where we are, or how many twists and turns the road takes, he always knows which way to go.  I, on the other hand, do not.  I will regularly get lost going places I’ve been to before.  I think of this verse when I come to a crossroad:  “This is what the LORD says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls…..” (Jeremiah 6:16)  Sadly, if I were to simply stand at the crossroads and look, I would go the wrong way. I truly have no sense of direction.  I absolutely need to ASK where the ‘good way’ is!
Regardless of whether or not we have an inborn GPS, we all have times when we lose direction, either literally or metaphorically.  Wouldn’t you agree that there are times when we feel without purpose, confused, or unsure about the path we’re taking or where we’re truly going? Thankfully, the Bible gives us affirmation that no matter how lost we may feel, God can guide us in the right direction.  I think Proverbs 3:5-6 lays it out quite clearly. “Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”  Back to that crossroad.  Left to my own devices, I would be going the wrong direction.  However, seeking God’s will, asking Him where the ‘good way’ is will result in His perfect guidance.  I also love this verse (21) found in Isaiah 30“And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.”  This is so comforting to me.  God’s voice is WAY better than the British lady on my GPS!  Hearing His voice in my ear leading and guiding me through life brings a sense of peace and assurance to my soul.  He does not want us to feel lost, without direction or purpose.  He is always present.  Always willing to give instructions. “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.” (Psalm 32:8)  We need only to listen.Oh and in case anyone is curious about that list of scenic drives, just click on the following link.  You’re welcome!

Crossing the Red Sea (Exodus 14:15-31)
Have you ever tried to walk through a corn maze? What seems like a simple puzzle can quickly frustrate and confuse us.  From our perspective, everything looks pretty much the same and there is no real way to assess where you are or where you should go. What would really help is a map!  And some sort of ‘you are here’ indicator.  Once you know what the maze looked like from above and where you were in the maze, getting out would be much simpler.  But the point of the maze is that you don’t have that perspective.  As Israel is finally and completely delivered, they see once again that the Lord is the One who actually has the needed perspective.  Each step in their deliverance is evidence that trusting and following the Lord is the way to deliverance!

JUNE CHALLENGE VERSE – Psalm 92:1-2, 4
“It is good to praise the Lord and make music to your name, O Most High, proclaiming your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night. For you make me glad by your deeds, Lord. I sing for joy at what your hands have done.”
