Hope Notes 06/17/2020

June 17, 2020

Dear Friends of Hope ~I have a clematis vine with gorgeous purple flowers that grows on a trellis right outside my kitchen window.  It’s over thirty years old and I’m always amazed at how prolific the blooms are every year! I recently learned a new fact about this plant; it grows stronger and hardier as it ages!  SO unlike we humans, right?  And that made me think about our faith.  As believers, when we are first saved, our faith is new and fragile.  We need to plant deep roots in Christ in order for our faith to grow.  “Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.” (Colossians 2:7)  Another way to grow our faith is shown in the example of Abraham as he waited for God’s promise of children to be fulfilled.  “No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.”  (Romans 4:20)  We need to give glory to God as we thank and praise Him for all of His promises: That He saved us and declared us righteous in Him (Romans 5:1) To never leave us nor forsake us. (Hebrews 13:5) That nothing will be able to separate us from his love. (Romans 8:38-39) That we can do all things through Christ who loves us. (Philippians 4:13)  Ideally, we should see our faith grow deeper and stronger as the years pass and as we experience trials or difficult circumstances.  We should be able to not only withstand stronger storms, but be able to live out our faith in ways that we couldn’t as new believers. John was told to write the church of Thyatira, “I know what you do. I know your love, your faithfulness, your service, and your patience. I know that you are doing more now than you did at first.” (Revelation 2:19 GNT)     I need to check in with myself.  Am I growing stronger, more deeply rooted in God?  Am I living out my faith in ways that bring glory to Him? I want to be sure I am looking to His promises and believing in them, not my feelings.  I need to believe God’s Word and not my circumstances.  I need to be walking in the footsteps of Abraham and seeing my faith grow stronger and sturdier over time, just like my beautiful clematis vine!

Courage (Joshua 1:1-9) – Father’s Day
Paul tells us that man is the head of the home. And he gives us instructions as men in how we are to interact with our family. So let’s take a look at something essential to manhood: courage. If we are to raise a generation to know, love, and follow Jesus, it will require courage from our men to step up into their faith and leadership.  What does it mean to lead?  How does leading as a believer differ from what the world (and often the church) have assumed?  Our church, our homes, and our world are desperate for our men to step into the roles for which God has designed them.  Whether you are single or married, young or old, let’s dig into this foundational element of being a man.

JUNE CHALLENGE VERSE – Psalm 92:1-2, 4
“It is good to praise the Lord and make music to your name, O Most High, proclaiming your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night. For you make me glad by your deeds, Lord. I sing for joy at what your hands have done.”
