Hope Notes 02/05/2020

February 5, 2020

DEAR FRIENDS OF HOPE ~We’re already into February and we haven’t really had any snow!  Some of you may think that’s a terrible thing (any skiers out there?) and some of you may be rejoicing.  I don’t want any big blizzards, but I kind of miss being able to look out my window in the morning and see a fresh covering of spotless snow.  I like the way the pristine whiteness reveals the tracks of various woodland creatures, revealing their activity during the night.  The snow covered ground is transformed into a map of their activity. When the ground is bare, their nighttime meanderings are invisible – secret.  But the snow exposes every move they make.  How about us?  Do we think we can keep the things we do a secret?  We might be able to conceal them from friends or family, but we can never hide them from God!  There are many places in the Bible where Scripture tells us that nothing gets by God, but this verse in Hebrews is particularly bold: “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” (Hebrews 4:13)  Yikes, if that doesn’t make you think twice about trying to disguise your activities from God, I don’t know what would! Why do we think we can hide any part of us from our Creator?  The One who made us knows us better than we know ourselves.  “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me.  You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely. You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me.” (Psalm 139:1-5)  We need not even bother to try and hide our thoughts, our deeds, or our sins.  Just as that immaculate covering of snow shows every little footprint in stark clarity, so does the Light of our Lord illuminate the darkness in us.
SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE –  Faithful Failures (Exodus 6:10-12 / 6:26-7:7)  COMMUNION
The problem for most of us is that we are well acquainted with our failures and weaknesses. Walking by faith requires some level of confidence that we are eligible and can be useful.  How do you keep going when it seems obvious that everything you try for God falls flat?  How can you let God lead your life when you’re convinced that you’re defective or broken or too weak to pull it off? Moses faces exactly that question.  He has stepped out in faith to follow God’s plan, but nothing has worked out yet.  We can imagine that he is already feeling déjà vu from his time decades ago when his bid to free his people fell flat. Today, we look at Moses’ experience as God invites him to see past his failures and into simply being faithful with what the Lord has asked.

Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with.  Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org and on YouTube “Hope Christian Fellowship”.

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up!  “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)  PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday.  So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the 1st & 2nd Grade classroom to pray together for God’s power in each of us.  We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!

Join us for our study in the book of Ephesians.  This book is a beautiful revelation of the Church and the spiritual blessings we have in Christ Jesus. Paul explains the mystery of the church and gives practical insight into living as believers.

“When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity. Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.”

Our small group sheets are out! Find them on our website under Resources.

K-5th Grade Bible Study and Epic Hangout Time
Join us for a study of God’s word, snacks, video games, theme nights and epic skits!
For the month of January, we averaged $8897 per week.  This is a significant increase from how we started last year, and a positive start to our year. But it is behind our target of $9400 per week.  We need to press forward in our sacrifice so that we can build towards our budget needs and accomplish all that the Lord has for Hope this year.  We finished 2019 with a final weekly average of $9104, so we’re confident that we will be able to grow our giving well past our target for this year.
Also, our total towards our special projects giving now stands at $62,523.  We are ready to cross our finish line on this!  Our goal of $65,000 is in sight and we’re excited to finish this together.

BOWLING – Sunday, March 8th from 4:30 – 6:30 pm
Join us at Bowlero (Formerly Brunswick Zone) located at 1328 Delsea Dr, Deptford Township, NJ 08096.  Cost is only $5/person.  Come and bowl, come just to cheer folks on, come for the fellowship!  We need to let Bowlero know how many lanes we need, so please make sure to sign up in the lobby.

Are you remembering to put your change into your Choices of the Heart Crisis Pregnancy Center’s baby bottles? You can even keep it simple by writing a tax deductible check made payable to Choices of the Heart and slip it into the bottle.  As local women see their babies on the free ultrasound tests, the percentage who choose life is remarkably increased. Save the babies – fill your bottles and return by March 1st. See Wendy Devereaux with questions.

Our Worship Ministry is looking for some skilled musicians and/or gifted vocalists who may want to explore the opportunity to get involved with our stage team here at Hope! If that sounds like you and you consider Hope your home church (faithfully attending 3 months or longer) please reach out to Dana at danaott@hopechristianfellowship.org; she’d love to set up a time to have a coffee & chat about your interest, skill levels, past experience playing or singing, and your availability. Our Philosophy of Worship is available on our website under “Music Ministry” which is a drop down under “Going Deeper” – that’s a great place to get a feel for what we value and how we desire to serve any given Sunday. Looking forward to how He may add to our team in 2020!

We could use a few volunteers for various positions in our Tech Booth. Our Sound Board Team is for people who have aptitudes with technology and an ear for mixing live music.  We will train you for our specific setup.  And our Broadcast Team needs people who are familiar with basic computer skills and willing to help us with recording and streaming.  Let us know if you can help by reaching out to set up a conversation with Pastor Mark (markott@hopechristianfellowship.org).

If you are interested in being baptized, Pastor Mark will be holding classes on Sunday, February 23rd & Sunday, March 1st after the second service. The baptism service will be Wednesday, March 4th @ 7:00 pm. Please sign up so that we can get an idea of how many are interested. Signup sheets are in the lobby.

We are offering four different classes that will meet Wednesday nights in February at 7:00 pm. These classes are great for those who are not yet a part of a small group or who are just looking for an additional study. See descriptions below for each workshop.

How are you? Busy. Aren’t we all? Can you imagine a world where that’s different? Barely, right? But take a moment and imagine Jesus being in a hurry – snapping at Mary for dropping the humus, losing his temper on Peter for improperly storing the fishing nets, ignoring an ailing woman to go and heal a soldier’s daughter. Imagining Jesus in a hurry is as difficult as imagining my life at rest. But in this class we’ll look at 4 practices of Jesus that we can incorporate into our lives to bring our bodies and souls to rest.

In our post-modern society, the Christian seeking to fulfill Jesus’ Great Commission is faced with two challenges:   words have lost their meaning, and the Bible is poorly understood (or flatly rejected) outside of the church.   How, then, can we effectively communicate the Truth  to our friends/families/neighbors….to the world at large?    We will explore the literary styles employed in Scripture, and talk about how we express our faith now.   To help us, we will look at certain themes in Biblical communication:   Discipline, Parable, Prayer, and Personal Experience.
This workshop is for all parents – future, new, or experienced –  that want to improve their skills and become more effective at faith based parenting. We’ll be focusing on ways to communicate, discipline, encourage, and love our kids in a way that reflects God’s love and grace for us. There is no one right way to parent, but our hope is that this class will help teach you to parent in a way that establishes a firm spiritual foundation in your children’s lives and have an eternal impact on them!

Please Note: this class meets from 6:30 – 8:30 and runs through April 1st
We’re hosting Dave Ramsey’s FPU series – perfect for the new year! One of the most important things we can do in our relationship with God is to read His word. And yet, we often feel overwhelmed or don’t know where to start! The new year is a great time to set a bible reading goal and we have a resource to help! This plan will guide you to read through either the New Testament or the entire bible in a year, reading five days a week.Bible reading plans are available on our website under ‘Resources’.
