Hope Notes 01/08/2020

January 8, 2020

DEAR FRIENDS OF HOPE ~Here we are, one week into the New Year.  Are you thinking, “Oooo new things, new me, new year?” Or has it already lost its shine and things don’t feel so new?  Well thankfully, no matter how WE are feeling about all the ‘new year, new beginnings’ thing, we have this encouragement from the Lord Himself: “This is what the LORD says— he who made a way through the sea, a path through the mighty waters; Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!” (Isaiah 43:16)  God is ALWAYS doing a new thing in our lives and in our hearts.  He has mighty plans for us, plans that we cannot foresee or sometimes even understand!  “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)  But we can trust that He always wants good for us; He is always at work behind the scenes, weaving all the circumstances of our lives together for His purpose.  We serve a generous God. He delights in giving us opportunities beyond our capabilities to stretch our faith and our trust in Him.  He has promised to equip us, and remain with us through each bend in the road.  There are plenty of new things to be found around those twists and turns!  Don’t be afraid of them.  We also need to remember this: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new has come!”  (2 Corinthians 5:17)  We are new creations in Christ.  Not just for New Year’s Day, but for every day, forever.  So if the promise of a shiny New Year has already lost its luster, take heart.  God is not bound by New Year’s Eve in order to do a ‘new thing’. He is making us and our lives new each and every day.  He is always giving us new opportunities to serve Him, to follow Him, and to obey Him.  If we boldly seize those God given opportunities and trust Him to lead us, we will find that our hearts and lives feel fresh and renewed, no matter what time of year it is!
SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE – Who is the Lord? (Exodus 5:1-5)
Most people we know have some thoughts about God. They may or may not believe in Him, but they think they know what we’re talking about when we mention God. That doesn’t mean that they aren’t still asking the same question Pharaoh did.  When the Egyptian ruler asked Moses, Who is the Lord?, he was asking why the God of Israel deserved any kind of obedience or reverence.  Basically, Pharaoh thought like many in his culture: that there were many gods and you should try to figure out which one was the most powerful at any moment, so you could be on the winning side.  His question was said in challenge against the true and living God, but it was a piercing question for him and it is for us today as well.  Whether we are not sure what we think about God, or we are Christians who claim to worship and follow Him, the answer to this questions is vital.  Let’s explore it together today!

Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with.  Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org and on YouTube “Hope Christian Fellowship”.

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up!  “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)  PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday.  So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the 1st & 2nd Grade classroom to pray together for God’s power in each of us.  We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!

Join us for our study in the book of Ephesians.  This book is a beautiful revelation of the Church and the spiritual blessings we have in Christ Jesus. Paul explains the mystery of the church and gives practical insight into living as believers.
Please Note:  We are resuming on January 8th.

For 2019, we averaged $9047 per week which was well over our weekly target of $8500.  For 2020, our target is $9400, so we have new challenges with the new year.  We are so grateful for every person who has sacrificed and faithfully given to God’s work at Hope in the past year.  In addition, we are nearing the finish line on our HVAC Projects giving,  Our goal over the past two years has been to get to $65,000, and our current total is $60,418.  We are praying that we will be able to reach our goal early in the new year and address all of our HVAC needs.

We are offering four different classes that will meet Wednesday nights in February at 7:00 pm. These classes are great for those who are not yet a part of a small group or who are just looking for an additional study. See descriptions below for each workshop. Sign-up in the lobby!

How are you? Busy. Aren’t we all? Can you imagine a world where that’s different? Barely, right? But take a moment and imagine Jesus being in a hurry – snapping at Mary for dropping the humus, losing his temper on Peter for improperly storing the fishing nets, ignoring an ailing woman to go and heal a soldier’s daughter. Imagining Jesus in a hurry is as difficult as imagining my life at rest. But in this class we’ll look at 4 practices of Jesus that we can incorporate into our lives to bring our bodies and souls to rest.

In our post-modern society, the Christian seeking to fulfill Jesus’ Great Commission is faced with two challenges:   words have lost their meaning, and the Bible is poorly understood (or flatly rejected) outside of the church.   How, then, can we effectively communicate the Truth  to our friends/families/neighbors….to the world at large?    We will explore the literary styles employed in Scripture, and talk about how we express our faith now.   To help us, we will look at certain themes in Biblical communication:   Discipline, Parable, Prayer, and Personal Experience.PARENTING: FULFILLING THE CALL (Matt Russell)
This workshop is for all parents – future, new, or experienced –  that want to improve their skills and become more effective at faith based parenting. We’ll be focusing on ways to communicate, discipline, encourage, and love our kids in a way that reflects God’s love and grace for us. There is no one right way to parent, but our hope is that this class will help teach you to parent in a way that establishes a firm spiritual foundation in your children’s lives and have an eternal impact on them!

Please Note: this class meets from 6:30 – 8:30 and runs through April 1st
We’re hosting Dave Ramsey’s FPU series – perfect for the new year! One of the most important things we can do in our relationship with God is to read His word. And yet, we often feel overwhelmed or don’t know where to start! The new year is a great time to set a bible reading goal and we have a resource to help! This plan will guide you to read through either the New Testament or the entire bible in a year, reading five days a week.Bible reading plans are available on our website under ‘Resources’.
