Hope Notes 09/25/2019

September 25, 2019

When was the last time you stopped to think about the condition of your heart? For some of you it may have been a recent visit to the doctor where you received disturbing news about your cholesterol. Maybe you’re young and healthy so it isn’t even on your radar. That’s where I was some 26 years ago when a seemingly minor blip in a doctor’s stethoscope caused me to receive a phone call in which he said “Have someone drive you immediately to the ER”! (Short story version) I never thought so much about my heart in my entire life until that moment. One procedure and some lifelong medication later, my heart is working just fine. Now when I think about the condition of my heart, I’m not just thinking physical; I’m thinking spiritual. Jeremiah 17:9 tells us that “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.” Beyond cure!! What happens when your heart is beyond cure and all options have been exhausted? I think the only thing left is a heart transplant. Thankfully for us, God offers us the best kind of heart transplant! “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” (Ezekiel 36:26) I want one of those! A new heart. One that is clean, pure, and brimming with the kind of love God shows. My heart longs to be more like His. “Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10) It goes without saying that we need to take care of our physical bodies/hearts. So eat healthy, exercise, and stay on top of regular checkups. But we also need to be careful to take care of the spiritual condition of our hearts. Proverbs 4:23 warns us “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Stay immersed in God’s Word, pray, have fellowship with believers, attend and serve in church. Your heart will thank you for it!

One of our challenges as a church for this year has been to find a way to integrate newer or disconnected people into our family. This can be difficult for any number of reasons, but we believe that we have the power of God through the Holy Spirit in each of us to accomplish this work for God’s kingdom. We’re going to spend a few weeks talking about WHY and HOW we all can have a part at bringing outsiders in.

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE – Train Up a Child (Proverbs 23:15-16; 22:6 / Luke 18:16)
We’re going to close out our discussion on bringing outsiders in with a different focus this morning. Our thoughts are going to turn to the younger generations at Hope. This may seem to be disconnected from our attention this month on small groups. But if we truly want to be a church that knows how to include people, we have to be a church that models this to our kids and for our kids. One of the most underrated parts of church life is the impact that is made on preschoolers and elementary kids. They are sponges who basically soak up all that we show them. So let’s ask God today to help us see how we can impact the generations to come with choices we’re making right now. And let’s pray that Hope will always be a place where the outsider is invited in.

Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org and on YouTube “Hope Christian Fellowship”.
SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday. So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the 1st & 2nd Grade classroom to pray together for God’s power in each of us. We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!

Join us for our study in the book of Ephesians. This book is a beautiful revelation of the Church and the spiritual blessings we have in Christ Jesus. Paul explains the mystery of the church and gives practical insight into living as believers.
“If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing right. But if you show favoritism, you sin…”

Each month we’ll focus on one of our church goals for 2019 and have a weekly challenge to help us achieve it! Let’s ask the Lord to work through us this year!
