Hope Notes 05/15/2019

May 15, 2019

Dear Hope Friends,

“You become a masterpiece when you learn to master peace.” Does this quote rub you the wrong way like it does me? It popped up on social media and I felt my inner “Truth Meter” tip into the red zone. It’s wrong on so many levels! First off, we are a masterpiece because we are made by the Master. “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” (Ephesians 2:10) Not only that, but we are created in His image! “Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image’….” (Genesis 1:26) We are God’s work of art. He is the Potter and we are the clay. His fingerprints are all over us. “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand.” (Jeremiah 18:6)
Secondly, we will NEVER ‘master peace’ on our own! True peace can only be found in our Lord and Savior. “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7) Psalm 29:11 tells us, “The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace.” And let’s not forget the fruits of the Spirit – “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22-23)
It really bothers me when I read things like that quote. So many people take it as truth. They believe they can be self-made. That they can control their own destiny, achieve inner peace with enough meditation and determine how they are going to run their lives. I’ve been told how foolish I am for not believing I have this wonderful power at my disposal and therefore allowing some unseen higher power to have dominion over me. That’s okay with me. He is my Master and He gives me His peace. That’s good enough for me.

Why We Worship – A series on the depth behind our singing together in church.
Each week we get together as a church and sing. In fact, churches all around the world get together every Sunday and do the same thing. But do you know why this is virtually a universal part of church? We even see worship singing in heaven! Why is this such a big deal? And what do you miss when you don’t show up? In the next few weeks, we’ll see how much worship means and why it is an indispensable part of your Christian life. Hopefully, when we’re through, we’ll all value showing up at church to worship together more than ever before.

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE – To Do Battle (2 Chronicles 20:2, 15, 19-24; / Romans 7:14-15 / Philippians 2:3-5 / Ephesians 6:11-17)
We don’t often associate music with a fight. In the last few years, we have seen the tragic combination of violence and music too often. The irony is that music is generally associated with enjoyment and ‘good feelings’. So when anger or danger shows up where people are singing along to their favorite songs, it is startling. But one of the big reasons we sing in church is to do battle spiritually. You may not realize how imperative it is that you regularly worship with your church family, but we learn from God’s Word that worship is definitely a part of our war against spiritual forces. We’re going to start our discussion on worship with one of the most practical reasons we worship: because music fuels our fight!

Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org.
SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 in Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday. So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the 1st & 2nd Grade classroom to pray together for God’s power in each of us. We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!

MAY CHALLENGE VERSE – Ephesians 4:26-27
In your anger, do not sin. Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry. And do not give the devil a foothold.

Each month we’ll focus on one of our church goals for 2019 and have a weekly challenge to help us achieve it! Let’s ask the Lord to work through us this year!
Will you invest sacrificially in what God is doing at Hope?

Come join us for this study on the book of Ephesians. It’s a good mid-week boost for our spiritual growth. If you are unable to make it out, you can watch our live stream on Facebook!
Please Note: While our regular Bible study is on hiatus during the month of June, we are offering the following Workshop Wednesday classes. Take some time to peruse the topics and then sign up for one of the classes on the sheets provided in the lobby.

Grief: God’s Help in Times of Sorrow
Led by Nancy Reeves
This study will help one in the difficult journey of grieving a loss, whether it’s the loss of a loved one, a marriage, a job or a home. Each study is dedicated to an emotion common to the grieving process: denial, fear, anger, guilt, sadness, hope, faith, acceptance and praise. The Psalm for each lesson deals with the same emotion and helps us understand God’s role and power in our healing.

The Art of Neighboring
Led by Dave Hallahan
When Jesus was asked to sum up everything into one command, he said to love God with everything we have and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Most of us have turned this simple idea of loving our neighbors into a nice saying, but going on with our lives without actually putting it into practice. What would happen if every follower of Jesus took the Great Commandment literally? Is it possible that the solution to our society’s biggest issues has been right under our noses for the past two thousand years?

“Overcomer” by David Jeremiah
Led by Mike Hartwell
In John 16:33 Jesus says, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” How do we respond to the troubles of this world? We can either concede defeat or live in the victory God has promised. In Overcomer, Dr. Jeremiah uses Ephesians 6 to lay out a pathway for spiritual victory. He shows us eight ways to live a life of unstoppable strength, unmovable faith, and unbelievable power.

Hearing God Speak Through Nature
Led by Deb McCarson
We know that the heavens declare the glory of God, and we see His attributes every day through His creation. In this workshop, we will investigate scripture that shows it is God’s intention to speak to us specifically through His creation. Using prompts from nature, we will participate in activities that encourage reflection and allow us to practice hearing God’s voice in a very personal way.

“When the Enemy Strikes” by Charles Stanley
Led by Ryan Winstel
Fear, discouragement, loneliness, anger and temptation are human struggles we all endure at some point in our life. Sometimes these can come from an enemy that we can not defeat on our own. But thankfully, God has provided us a way to win this battle through reliance on Him and protection through His strength and His Word. Let’s seek out Scripture and how it reveals our responses to these threats.
