Hope Notes 05/08/2019

May 8, 2019

Dear Hope Friends,

A few weeks ago, Merriam-Webster added 640 new words to the dictionary. This is glorious news to a wordie (yes that’s in the dictionary!) like me. I love discovering a new word and keep my phone close at hand when reading so that I can easily look up a word I’m not familiar with. I enjoy comparing words in a thesaurus. Confession: I may love looking through a thesaurus, but I can never pronounce it correctly; I have a mental block! On Merriam-Webster’s homepage, it says “The English language never sleeps; neither does the dictionary.” I say our God never sleeps and neither does His Word! “Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps.” (Psalm 121:4) God’s Word is “alive and active, sharper than any two edged sword…” (Hebrews 4:12) Merriam-Webster also tells us that “The work of revising a dictionary is constant, and it mirrors the culture’s need to make sense of the world with words.” Nothing could be further from the truth regarding God’s Word! John issues a solemn warning in Revelation 22:18: “I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book…” Nor do we revise Scripture in order to have it make sense in today’s world. It seems to me the exact opposite is true! “The natural man does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God. For they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.” (1 Corinthians 2:14) As a Believer, I take comfort in the fact that God’s Word is alive and active in my life, yet unchanging. It says the same things it said when the authors first penned the words on papyrus through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. New words and changes to reflect our culture are an exciting thing (at least to me) in the dictionary. But I like having God’s Word remain an unmodified, unvarying source of Truth for all eternity.

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE – Mother’s Day – Choices of the Heart (Genesis 38:24-30)
Few gifts in life are more universal or precious than the gift of motherhood. While not everyone experiences it the same way, we all have a mother. And this simple reminder points us back to the Creator of life. Our society is currently in a real struggle to decide what to do with babies before they are born. As believers, we want to reflect the respect we have for the value of the gift God gives as a tiny child is formed. But we also want to express love and kindness more than judgment and rejection. We want to help people who are hurting and overwhelmed. This Mother’s Day, we have the privilege of hearing from a local ministry that we support, Choices of the Heart. We’ll hear about how they find practical and gracious ways to help those who are caught in the choice about what to do with their unborn child. And we’ll dig into God’s Word for a story about an unwed mother, the judgment thrown at her by powerful people, and the value of the children she carries.

Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org.
SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 in Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday. So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the 1st & 2nd Grade classroom to pray together for God’s power in each of us. We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!

MAY CHALLENGE VERSE – Ephesians 4:26-27
In your anger, do not sin. Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry. And do not give the devil a foothold.

Each month we’ll focus on one of our church goals for 2019 and have a weekly challenge to help us achieve it! Let’s ask the Lord to work through us this year!
Are there ways you can give beyond money?

Come join us for this study on the book of Ephesians. It’s a good mid-week boost for our spiritual growth. If you are unable to make it out, you can watch our live stream on Facebook!
Please Note: While our regular Bible study is on hiatus during the month of June, we are offering the following Workshop Wednesday classes. Take some time to peruse the topics and then sign up for one of the classes on the sheets provided in the lobby.

Grief: God’s Help in Times of Sorrow
Led by Nancy Reeves
This study will help one in the difficult journey of grieving a loss, whether it’s the loss of a loved one, a marriage, a job or a home. Each study is dedicated to an emotion common to the grieving process: denial, fear, anger, guilt, sadness, hope, faith, acceptance and praise. The Psalm for each lesson deals with the same emotion and helps us understand God’s role and power in our healing.

The Art of Neighboring
Led by Dave Hallahan
When Jesus was asked to sum up everything into one command, he said to love God with everything we have and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Most of us have turned this simple idea of loving our neighbors into a nice saying, but going on with our lives without actually putting it into practice. What would happen if every follower of Jesus took the Great Commandment literally? Is it possible that the solution to our society’s biggest issues has been right under our noses for the past two thousand years?

“Overcomer” by David Jeremiah
Led by Mike Hartwell
In John 16:33 Jesus says, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” How do we respond to the troubles of this world? We can either concede defeat or live in the victory God has promised. In Overcomer, Dr. Jeremiah uses Ephesians 6 to lay out a pathway for spiritual victory. He shows us eight ways to live a life of unstoppable strength, unmovable faith, and unbelievable power.

Hearing God Speak Through Nature
Led by Deb McCarson
We know that the heavens declare the glory of God, and we see His attributes every day through His creation. In this workshop, we will investigate scripture that shows it is God’s intention to speak to us specifically through His creation. Using prompts from nature, we will participate in activities that encourage reflection and allow us to practice hearing God’s voice in a very personal way.

“When the Enemy Strikes” by Charles Stanley
Led by Ryan Winstel
Fear, discouragement, loneliness, anger and temptation are human struggles we all endure at some point in our life. Sometimes these can come from an enemy that we can not defeat on our own. But thankfully, God has provided us a way to win this battle through reliance on Him and protection through His strength and His Word. Let’s seek out Scripture and how it reveals our responses to these threats.

** That God would lead us to the right man for the future Assistant Pastor position and provide the necessary weekly giving growth to add him to staff.
