Hope Notes 05/01/2019

May 1, 2019

Dear Hope Friends,

Twenty seven years ago my husband opened his own trailer repair business. We christened it JSP Trailer; the initials stood for Jesus Shall Provide. And we had no reason to doubt that He would. We had spent countless hours in prayer and sought wise, Christian counsel as well as practical business information. It was not a decision made lightly. Therefore, we firmly believed He would provide us with customers, the ability to hire other Christians and help those who needed jobs. We believed He would provide us with income for our family and the freedom that would eventually come from running your own business. Just about all of these things did not come to pass, and we had to make the decision to close the doors to that dream. We also filed a tax return with negative income that year. (Yes, that really is a thing!)
Now, lest you think I am telling you this to recount how Jesus did NOT provide, let me assure you that was not the case. We foolishly thought His provision would be in material or monetary things. Thankfully, He knew better what we needed. He knew that this situation was the perfect opportunity for Him to show us how to trust in Him. How to keep from trusting in our bank account. How to humble ourselves and allow others to help us. (Anyone thinking of Pastor Mark’s message from Sunday now?) Listen to just a few of the ways He provided for us: A Christmas tree complete with presents for all of us left by our car after church on Christmas Eve. Bags of food on our doorstep. Checks that came in the mail in the exact amount needed for various bills. Doctors who listened to my pleas and wiped out all that we owed them. I was leading a women’s’ Bible study and, for the first time, was able to let those women see me broken. They surrounded me with encouragement and comfort. I could go on and on. These were lessons we needed. These were gifts from our heavenly Father.
I am so thankful for that difficult season. We would never have experienced the love of God in that way had JSP flourished. No one chooses to walk through the Refiner’s fire, but I firmly believe that if we could see things the way God does, we would not be so afraid of that purifying fire. “I will refine them like silver and test them like gold. They will call on My name, and I will answer them. I will say, They are My people, and they will say, The LORD is our God.” (Zechariah 13:9) When the storm was over, the lessons learned remained. They endure to this day, and praise God they do. Whenever I am tempted to stress over a bank balance that doesn’t seem like enough, or a situation that seems impossible, I remember those lessons learned in the valley. I know that “my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19) God never fails. He never has. He never will. Hebrews 13:5 NLT says it best – “Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.” And He knows what we need better than we do!

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE – Desperate Times (Acts 4:21-31)
You’re certainly familiar with the expression, “desperate times call for desperate measures.” Good news hardly ever precedes or follows that expression. But it’s just pithy enough to sound true. We’ve all experienced that fight or flight moment where our back was against the wall. Behavior that would normally be unacceptable, all of a sudden became a real possibility. But do desperate times actually call for desperate measures? Is this how the people of God should act? The Bible is rife with examples of men and women in desperate times, some act desperately while others don’t. How do we make sure we are faithful in good times and in desperate ones?

Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org.
SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 in Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday. So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the 1st & 2nd Grade classroom to pray together for God’s power in each of us. We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!

MAY CHALLENGE VERSE – Ephesians 4:26-27
In your anger, do not sin. Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry. And do not give the devil a foothold.

Each month we’ll focus on one of our church goals for 2019 and have a weekly challenge to help us achieve it! Let’s ask the Lord to work through us this year!
Are you giving what God has asked you to give?

Come join us for this study on the book of Ephesians. It’s a good mid-week boost for our spiritual growth. If you are unable to make it out, you can watch our live stream on Facebook!

** That the Lord would help us effectively integrate new folks so they will easily and quickly feel like they are fully connected at Hope.
** That God would lead us to the right man for the future Assistant Pastor position and provide the necessary weekly giving growth to add him to staff.
