Hope Notes 3/27/19

March 27, 2019

Dear Hope Friends,

Today I learned about something I’ve never heard of. Did you know there is a group of people (quite a large group!) who believe that the earth is flat? Seriously. They’re called ‘flat earthers’. They belong to the Flat Earth Society. Are you kidding me? I did some research and, sure enough, there is a plethora of information proclaiming this to be true, with all kinds of ‘evidence’. Even some Scripture verses. I kid you not. Maybe I’m late to the party; have you all heard about this? By now I think you know I have a curious mind, so I set out to see what the Bible has to say about all of this.
Let me share with you the main verse they use to back their belief. It’s in Isaiah 40:22: “He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth…” HA! A sphere can certainly appear to be a circle depending on the angle you’re viewing it from, but by no means does that make our earth a flat circle floating through space. However, there are numerous of verses regarding God’s creation of the world. We’re all familiar with the details laid out in Genesis, but I was surprised to see how many references there were scattered throughout Scripture. Reading over and over about God’s power and majesty in creating the world gave me a new appreciation for His deity. I mean, come on………” He stretches the northern skies over empty space; he hangs the earth on nothing.” (Job 26:7) ON NOTHING!! And then, “He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.” (Psalm 147:4) If He knows the name of every single star, I think He knows each of our names don’t you? I could list verse after verse, but I think you get my drift. It makes me ashamed to think of all the times my trust in Him has wavered. Or when I’ve doubted that He would really take care of some situation in my life. How could I question the ability of our God who created the very earth I’m standing on? Jeremiah 32:17 puts things in perspective: “Oh, Lord GOD! You have made the heavens and earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too difficult for You!”
So now that my faith has been given a booster shot, so to speak, my one concern now is that the internet will have deemed me a fellow flat earther based on my google history and inundate my online experience with all kinds of flat earth ads!

SUNDAY MORNINGS
SERMON ON THE MOUNT SERIES
The greatest sermon ever preached still has unbelievable power to change us. Jesus spoke these words about 2000 years ago to a large audience on a hillside, but He meant them to challenge us as well. The thoughts upend normal thinking on almost every spiritual front, and if we want to follow Jesus, much of what He represents starts here!

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE – By Their Fruits (Matthew 7:15-20)
We are bombarded by advertising every single day. Restaurants serve us pictures of food that bears little resemblance to what actually shows up in front of paying customers. Amazing deals are advertised only to be undermined by the ‘small print’. With all the sensational promises we hear, it is hard for us to know how to sort through which ones to believe, and which ones to ignore. Christianity isn’t immune to this dynamic either. Teachers proclaim to have the pathway to God or the inside track on how to make life work. But they often disagree with one another. How are we to know which ones to believe and which ones to ignore? Jesus has a stunningly simple solution. It is one that helps us sort through the teachers around us; but it also helps us weed out our own souls!

EASTER CANTATA – “THE STORY”
You won’t want to miss our choir’s presentation of “The Story-The Musical” which is based on the book by Max Lucado with music written by Nichole Nordeman. It’s not just a Resurrection story, it’s the bigger, beautiful, miraculous story of God’s redemptive plan from Genesis to Revelation. The performance dates will be Good Friday (April 19th) at 7:00 pm and Easter Sunday (April 21st) at both services.

MESSAGES AVAILABLE
Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org.
SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 in Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday. So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the Youth Room to pray together for God’s power in each of us. We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!
