Hope Notes 3/13/19

March 13, 2019

Dear Hope Friends,

Are you enjoying the extra bit of daylight now that daylight savings time is in effect? While it IS nice to have that extended period of sunlight, for an early bird like me I don’t enjoy the delay in seeing the sun come up! Truth be told I don’t mind having the evening fade a bit earlier. To me it feels quiet and peaceful. My family makes fun of me for it, but I stand by it! Every year when we turn our clocks ahead, I think of this verse: “So the sun stood still and the moon stopped………….The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day.” (Joshua 10:13) The Israelites didn’t just experience an hour of ‘daylight savings’…….they experienced an entire extra day! What a compelling example of God’s power! Some scientists claim that it was merely the first account of an annular eclipse. Try telling that to Joshua! Knowing his God, his God’s power, and his God’s promise, he called out to God for help. I don’t believe he ever doubted that God would hear and respond. I want to have a faith like that. A faith full of trust built on believing that my God has power beyond anything I could imagine, that He hears my cries for help, that He can do absolutely whatever is needed, even in the most impossible of situations. Jeremiah also had that kind of faith. “Oh, Lord GOD! You have made the heavens and earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too difficult for You!” (Jeremiah 32:17) And in case we didn’t catch on, a little further down in Jeremiah God Himself says, “I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?” (Jeremiah 32:27) I think that the next time I am feeling overwhelmed and burdened by the cares of this world, I am going to remind myself that I serve a God who can make the sun stand still! In light of that, how could I doubt for a moment that He cannot take care of ME?!

The greatest sermon ever preached still has unbelievable power to change us. Jesus spoke these words about 2000 years ago to a large audience on a hillside, but He meant them to challenge us as well. The thoughts upend normal thinking on almost every spiritual front, and if we want to follow Jesus, much of what He represents starts here!

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE – Confident Requests (Matthew 7:7-11)
If you’ve ever read the book or watched the movie, there’s a scene in The Lord of the Rings where the whole group is stuck in front of a door while they try to figure out the magic words to open the door. Of course, while they are waiting, danger lurks. And soon after they enter, they are very aware that there is more danger inside. Jesus uses the picture of a closed door to invite people to pray. His words focus on the hope we all have that our prayers will be answered, which He compares to a door being opened. But sometimes, people think they have to find the ‘magic’ words to get their prayers answered. Jesus wants us to know that it doesn’t work like that. He wants to teach us about how confident we can be that our prayers will be answered, and that God will do good for us.

You won’t want to miss our choir’s presentation of “The Story-The Musical” which is based on the book by Max Lucado with music written by Nichole Nordeman. It’s not just a Resurrection story, it’s the bigger, beautiful, miraculous story of God’s redemptive plan from Genesis to Revelation. The performance dates will be Good Friday (April 19th) and Easter Sunday (April 21st) at both services.

Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org.
SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 in Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday. So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the Youth Room to pray together for God’s power in each of us. We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!

For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does He withhold from those whose walk is blameless.

Each month we’ll focus on one of our church goals for 2019 and have a weekly challenge to help us achieve it! Let’s ask the Lord to work through us this year!
Ask God to direct money your way that you can give towards His Kingdom.

We have resources to help you stay committed to reading. One plan will guide you to read through the New Testament in a year reading about a chapter per day, while the other plan is more of an overview of the entire bible in a year, reading about 15 verses a day. You can also download the PDFs on our website under the “Resources” drop-down.

K-5th Grade Bible Study and Epic Hangout Time
Join us for a study of God’s word, snacks, video games, theme nights and epic skits!

For the month of February, we averaged $9914 per week, bringing our current annual average weekly giving up to $9047. This is now above our annual giving target of $8500 per week and is well on our way to one of our main goals for 2019: Significant growth in giving. Thank you to every one who has stepped up in sacrifice and faithful giving!
Also, we have now collected $45,572 towards our HVAC projects. This puts us less than $20,000 away from our goal of $65,000 and allows us to be at work on repairing and replacing the systems that have been so problematic over the past few years. We’re excited to press towards finishing this giving project!

One of the things we value most here at Hope is connection. Our new online directory will make it easier than ever to connect to each other!
