Hope Notes 1/16/19

January 16, 2019

Dear Hope Friends,

I know not everyone reading this follows social media, but I’ve got a question that you will see really does apply across the board. Why are we so stingy with our ‘likes’? In the world of social media, this means commenting or showing that you like a post. In the real world, I believe this means simply encouraging one another. Encouragement has different forms; it can be through a compliment, a kind word, a smile, a piece of advice, or even just a hug at the proper moment. So why are we often so miserly when it comes to this? We scroll through social media, never pausing for the split second it takes to give that magical thumbs up. We breeze past someone in the hall at church with nary a glance, let alone a word of encouragement or greeting. It doesn’t take long and it’s not that hard to do. And guess what guys? The Lord has reminded me that it’s not a suggestion; it’s a command. “Encourage one another daily.” (Hebrews 3:13) We can’t truly know what’s going on in other’s lives, can we? We don’t know if they’re feeling down, or lonely, or bad about themselves. Maybe seeing a number of thumbs up on Facebook cheers them up. Maybe a simple hello or compliment would lighten their load. “Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.” (Proverbs 12:25) So, whether it’s taking that split second to ‘like’ or comment on a post, or making sure to speak a kind word or give a friendly smile, let’s all cultivate this habit. It’s truly one of the easiest ways to follow the command God has given us!

SUNDAY MORNINGS
SERMON ON THE MOUNT SERIES
The greatest sermon ever preached still has unbelievable power to change us. Jesus spoke these words about 2000 years ago to a large audience on a hillside, but He meant them to challenge us as well. The thoughts upend normal thinking on almost every spiritual front, and if we want to follow Jesus, much of what He represents starts here!

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE – Whose Way is Greatest? (Matthew 6:10-11,13)
The Lord’s Prayer – Part 2
Many people think of prayer as a way to get God to do what the prayer thinks He should do. Yet, as Jesus prays, He seems to take an entirely different approach. Instead of starting with all kinds of requests about the circumstances of life, Jesus begins by declaring that He wants God’s way to unfold. He teaches us to see prayer as a way to align our hearts with our Lord’s heart. We learn that citizens of the kingdom want their King to be in charge – meaning that they themselves are not. All of this together means that prayer is something quite different than delivering our ‘wish lists’ to God. Instead, it is a connection where God’s way becomes our wish. And we recognize our dependence on Him as provider and protector.
MESSAGES AVAILABLE
Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 in Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday. So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the Youth Room to pray together for God’s power in each of us. We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH
JANUARY CHALLENGE VERSE – Psalm 37:1-3
“Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong; for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away. Trust the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.”

CHURCH CHALLENGE
Each month we’ll focus on one of our church goals for 2019 and have a weekly challenge to help us achieve it! Let’s ask the Lord to work through us this year!
January – Share Jesus
Be on the lookout for conversations that are actually opportunities God is giving you to share Jesus.

BIBLE READING PLANS FOR 2019

One plan will guide you to read through the New Testament in a year reading about a chapter per day, while the other plan is more of an overview of the entire bible in a year, reading about 15 verses a day. You can also download the PDFs on our website under the “Resources” drop-down.

HOPE’S PRAYER NEEDS
** That the Lord would help us effectively integrate new folks so they will easily and quickly feel like they are fully connected at Hope.
** That God would lead us to the right man for the future Assistant Pastor position and provide the necessary weekly giving growth to add him to staff.

Eternally Changed,

Lois
