Hope Notes 1/9/19

January 9, 2019

Dear Hope Friends,

A couple days ago I went to Walmart to pick up my online grocery order. (Side Note: This is a glorious lifesaver for anyone who has to limit their walking around, or anyone who simply doesn’t have time!) Anyway, the woman came out to tell me she couldn’t find my order; was it possible I was at the wrong Walmart? Hahaha, not only was it POSSSIBLE, I’d done it before! I sheepishly admitted my mistake. It could have ended there, with me slinking off the drive to the correct Walmart. Instead, something magical happened. She began to tell me that she believed I was a Christian because of the music I always had playing when she was loading up my groceries. We confirmed that we were sisters-in-Christ and then she began relaying the sad story of what was happening in her life. She poured out her heart to this relatively complete stranger. We’ve mostly only ever had polite chit chat over the past year. But God knew she needed to share her stress and her sorrow with a sister. She spoke. I listened. We shared Scripture. She claimed her faith. Had I gone to the correct Walmart, this God appointed meeting would not have happened. One of my most common morning prayers is for God to be in charge of my day; to arrange it HIS way. I had my plan (or so I thought), and this blunder of appearing at the wrong store was not part of it! “The mind of man plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9) There are no coincidences in God’s world, my friends. He is constantly at work behind the scenes in ways we cannot begin to imagine. Perhaps God has a divine appointment for YOU today. When your plans go awry, stop and ask yourself if maybe this is just God’s way of directing your steps towards a path you need to walk on or a person you need to love on.

SUNDAY MORNINGS
SERMON ON THE MOUNT SERIES
The greatest sermon ever preached still has unbelievable power to change us. Jesus spoke these words about 2000 years ago to a large audience on a hillside, but He meant them to challenge us as well. The thoughts upend normal thinking on almost every spiritual front, and if we want to follow Jesus, much of what He represents starts here!

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE – Trust His Heart (Matthew 6:7-10) The Lord’s Prayer, Part One
Praying is one of the most basic parts of being a Christian. When you’re first a believer, you might feel like you don’t know how to pray ‘correctly’. While prayer is actually not that complicated, it had gotten very twisted up in Jesus’ time. So Jesus takes the opportunity while speaking to a crowd on a hillside, and teaches them how to pray. Some people today may be surprised to learn that the introduction to this prayer seems to strongly recommend against saying this (or any prayer) over and over again. But we can learn so much from what Jesus says in His teaching. So we’ll be taking the next three weeks to sort through and learn all that we can from the “Lord’s Prayer.”
MESSAGES AVAILABLE
Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 in Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday. So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the Youth Room to pray together for God’s power in each of us. We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH
JANUARY CHALLENGE VERSE – Psalm 37:1-3
“Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong; for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away. Trust the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.”

CHURCH CHALLENGE
Each month we’ll focus on one of our church goals for 2019 and have a weekly challenge to help us achieve it! Let’s ask the Lord to work through us this year!

BIBLE READING PLANS FOR 2019

One plan will guide you to read through the New Testament in a year reading about a chapter per day, while the other plan is more of an overview of the entire bible in a year, reading about 15 verses a day. HOPE ANNOUNCEMENTS
DECEMBER GIVING REPORT
For the month of December, we averaged $8551 per week, bringing our final average for 2018 to $8141 per week. We finished above our target for the year of $7950. Our new target for 2019 is $8500 per week, so we have a challenge in front of us, but we know that the Lord will provide through His people. Let’s lift this in prayer as we begin the New Year.
Also, for our HVAC Projects, we have now raised $41,703 pulling us closer to our goal of $65,000. We’re praying that we can raise the rest of this money in 2019 so all of our needed repairs to our HVAC systems can be done.

HOPE BOOK CLUB – NEW!
Love to read but not sure what? Made a resolution to read more? We’ll read a book a month and then meet the first Saturday of the month to discuss that book. Most of the books will be in the Christian non-fiction category and will encourage you to grow in your faith. If this seems like a great fit for you, sign up in the lobby. Any questions contact Dave Hallahan. For February we’ll be reading Gospel Fluency: Speaking the Truths of Jesus Into the Everyday Stuff of Life by Jeff Vanderstelt. Note: readers are responsible for their books.

He is Faithful,
