Hope Notes 10/31/18

October 31, 2018

Dear Friends of Hope,

Our words. We write them. We read them. We speak them. But how do we use them? God’s words. How does He use them? God used His words to create the earth. ‘When he spoke, the world was created; at His command everything appeared.’ (Psalm 33:9) Also, ‘God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.’ (Genesis 1:3) Jesus used His words to heal. In Matthew 8 we can read about the centurion who didn’t feel worthy to have Jesus come to his home. No worries! Jesus was able to heal his servant right then and there! ‘And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; let it be done for you as you have believed.” And the servant was healed at that very moment.’ (Matthew 8:13) Also in Matthew 8 we see how Jesus healed many possessed by demons with His word. ONE word! “When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.’ (Matthew 8:16)

As we can see, God’s words are powerful! But ours are powerful too. We can use them in different ways. For encouraging or criticizing. To express love or hatred. Anger. Resentment. We use them to tell lies or truth. Proverbs are filled with verses regarding our words. ‘Gentle words bring life and health; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.’ (Proverbs 15:4) ‘Evil words destroy one’s friends; wise discernment rescues the godly.’ (Proverbs 11:9) Do we want to destroy our friends or crush someone’s spirit? Of course not! We must use our words carefully and thoughtfully. ‘A person’s words can be life-giving water; words of true wisdom are as refreshing as a bubbling brook.’ (Proverbs 18:4) If any of these verses don’t do it for you, how about this one? Jesus Himself says, ‘I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak….’ (Matthew 12:36) Yikes! So, while we may not be able to speak something into being or heal with a word, we need to remember that our words do indeed have power. And we are called to use that power through the filter of God’s love.
(Interesting Side Note: Wrote this opening and then began working on the rest of the Notes. Check out our new Challenge Verse for November listed under Spiritual Growth to see the ‘coincidence’. Love when God does stuff like that!)

SUNDAY MORNINGS
SERMON ON THE MOUNT SERIES
The greatest sermon ever preached still has unbelievable power to change us. Jesus spoke these words about 2000 years ago to a large audience on a hillside, but He meant them to challenge us as well. The thoughts upend normal thinking on almost every spiritual front, and if we want to follow Jesus, much of what He represents starts here!
SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE – Cheating On Your Spouse (Matthew 5:27-30)
Some of us have taken this path and faced the devastation that follows. Others of us watch depictions of this storyline with fascination. It is incredible that something that causes so much pain to so many is the subject of story after story in our entertainment. Jesus takes on this topic with some startling words. In fact, these words are so shocking that most people don’t actually follow them. But what is His point? How can we take to heart what He says without watering it down? And ultimately, our goal is to learn from Him about how we ought to live and what we should want. So let’s take this morning and dive into this topic that is as important today as it ever has been.
MESSAGES AVAILABLE
Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 in Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday. So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the Youth Room to pray together for God’s power in each of us. We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH
NOVEMBER CHALLENGE VERSE – Proverbs 12:18
“The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”

WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY @ 7:00 – 8:15 pm
FALL BIBLE STUDY – ‘THINKING OUT LOUD SERIES”
Over the next few weeks we’ll be looking at topics where those who do not have experience can gain from those who do. So, if you have any experience with the upcoming topics (Depression, Racism, etc) we’d love to have you come out and share with us so that we can all learn more and be better prepared to engage with one another.
11/7 – A Patriarchy Problem?: Addressing Male Headship
In today’s world, the idea that men should lead or be in charge is thought to be the root of many of our culture’s problems. There is a conversation that much of the sexual harassment and abuse at the core of the #MeToo movement has grown out of a patriarch-based society. But the Bible talks about a man being the head of his wife and home. What does this mean, and has this indeed been a misguided way of structuring our lives? How does this apply to women in leadership in secular roles? How does it apply to the partnership between husband and wife in the home? We’ll dig into 1 Corinthians 11 and 14, 1 Timothy 2, and Ephesians 5 to see what Paul means in each of these passage. And we’ll ask ourselves what Genesis 1:27 and Galatians 3:28 have to say about this. We’ll also add in the fact that the first witnesses of Jesus’ resurrection are women. Putting all of this together and many other themes in Scripture should help us learn what ‘headship’ of man means and what it should look like in our homes, churches, and lives today.
PLEASE NOTE: There will be no Wednesday evening activities on October 31st.

OCTOBER GIVING UPDATE
For the month of October, we averaged $7950 which is exactly equal to our annual weekly giving target. This brings our annual average for 2018 to $8057. We’re deeply grateful for each person’s faithful sacrfice and generosity through this year. As we close out the year and head get ready for what’s ahead, we’re praying for significant growth in our giving.
