Hope Notes 10/24/18

October 24, 2018

Dear Friends of Hope,

We have a saying that has served us well in our family. At times we have been known to say one of us is ‘standing on the hairy edge’. Not literally, of course. (I’ve never known an edge to be hairy!) What we mean is we are ‘this close’ to falling apart. I’m sure all of you have been there, too. It could be that you’re about to erupt in anger, or a floodgate of tears is on the verge of opening up, or maybe you simply feel ready to snap with the weight of all those proverbial last straws on your back. It’s the thread of a feeling that, if you pulled at it just a little, would cause you to completely unravel. Right then and there! So, what are we all looking for in moments like these? Peace. Calm. Strength. Endurance. And where should we turn in order to find these things? Right to our heavenly Father! Oh it’s tempting to turn to all other sources first. Easier maybe. But they won’t deliver. You want peace and calm? (Isaiah 26:3) – “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” (Psalm 119:165) – “Abundant peace belongs to those who love Your instruction; nothing can make them stumble.” How about a little extra strength when the going gets rough? Our Father is the authority: “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.” (Isaiah 40:29) If you’re looking for comfort, look no further. God’s got you covered: “God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort.” (2 Corinthians 1:3) Hebrews 1:3 tells us that God ‘uses His powerful Word to hold all things together.’ So, if you feel like you’re coming apart at the seams, remember that the King of the Universe, the One who holds everything together, can certainly keep YOU together. You just need to get into His Word and off the hairy edge!

The greatest sermon ever preached still has unbelievable power to change us. Jesus spoke these words about 2000 years ago to a large audience on a hillside, but He meant them to challenge us as well. The thoughts upend normal thinking on almost every spiritual front, and if we want to follow Jesus, much of what He represents starts here!
SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE – Holding Your Rights (Matthew 5:25-26)
But I know I’m right! How often do we dig in for a fight when the alternative is to give in to someone else, even though I’m right? In today’s culture, we are told to stand up for our rights and those who do this are celebrated and honored. So why would we ever surrender our rights? Jesus talks about this topic by using a very specific example which is probably hard to understand in our society today. But it has deep meaning for those who follow Him and invites us to follow Him into setting aside what we have the right to, in order to live like He did.
Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 in Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday. So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the Youth Room to pray together for God’s power in each of us. We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!

“You Lord keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light. With your help, I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall. As for God, His way is perfect; the Lord’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in Him.”

Unable to make it out for Wednesday nights? We are LIVE STREAMING our Thinking Out Loud series on Facebook! Watch and interact from your phone or computer live! We’ll also continue to post videos of the night to our YouTube channel, so you can catch up at anytime. Or, listen to our Podcast on iTunes.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be looking at topics where those who do not have experience can gain from those who do. So, if you have any experience with the upcoming topics (Depression, Racism, etc) we’d love to have you come out and share with us so that we can all learn more and be better prepared to engage with one another.
10/24 Racism
Classifying people by race (or gender, or economic status, etc) has been the norm in the world through the ages. But God’s people have always been instructed to care for those who are from a different origin than they are. In fact, God makes it a very dramatic and pivotal point in the New Testament to include those races that were thought by God’s people to be horrific and evil. This reality for God’s people today should instruct the church of Jesus Christ to how we view those from different races than our own. And it asks us to care about the issue of racism that clearly matters to our Heavenly Father. Many times, the Bible has been used to justify racist behavior – even in recent American history. For those who haven’t experienced it, there may be an opportunity to listen and understand. And for those who have, the church should be a place where hope shines brightly for the wounds and scars of racism to be healed and erased. What should we know about racism in our time, and how can God’s people be used by the Lord to bring miraculous change on this issue in our world?
PLEASE NOTE: There will be no Wednesday evening activities on October 31st.
