Hope Notes 10/3/18

October 3, 2018

Dear Friends of Hope,

One of the things I often pray is for God to help me to be more like Him and less like me. So what would that mean? Let’s take a look at just a few of God’s attributes. Our God is unchanging. His plans do not change, nor do His promises. He never gets any better or worse. “I the Lord do not change.” (Malachi 3:6) That is a powerful Truth to hold on to in this world where your entire life can change in an instant. Me? Not so much. I can change my mind easily. I hate to say it, but I could rationalize breaking a promise if circumstances become difficult. Our God is wise. Consistently, perfectly wise. Our God is strong. “Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty…” (Psalm 24:8) I don’t feel very strong. Certainly not mighty! It doesn’t take much for me to become fearful, worried, or anxious. Our God is faithful. “If we are faithless, he remains faithful….” (2Timothy 2:13) Take out the ‘if’ and replace it with ‘when’. There is no doubt that I will not always be faithful. There are things in my life that sometimes come before my God. And He should ALWAYS be first. But maybe I’m too tired to read my Bible, or pray, or I focus too much on earthly relationships rather than the only One that matters. Okay now finally how about this one? Our God is love. “Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love” (1 John 4:7-8) Well, I know that I am not always loving. People can get on my nerves and I find myself walking away from them when I should be walking towards them. It’s sometimes hard to ‘love’ difficult people. I want to have a heart like Jesus. To see His children through His eyes, not mine. It’s so humbling when I think about just these few characteristics of our God and how short I fall. I can’t even imagine all the rest that I would surely not measure up to! But thankfully He does not look on us as we are, but as He has called us to be. Chosen, heirs, friends, holy, more than conquerors, a royal priesthood, new creations, lights in the darkness. I don’t know about you, but this brings me peace, hope and confidence to continue my quest to become more like Him and less like me!

The greatest sermon ever preached still has unbelievable power to change us. Jesus spoke these words about 2000 years ago to a large audience on a hillside, but He meant them to challenge us as well. The thoughts upend normal thinking on almost every spiritual front, and if we want to follow Jesus, much of what He represents starts here!
SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE – Salty Lights (Matthew 5:13-16)
There are some actors who are able to play any character. They have the ability to morph into any personality or look and can take on a role with a genius ability to portray whatever the writer and director want. But most actors specialize in a specific type of character. They are very good at what they do, but when they try to step out of their zone, they just can’t pull it off. There is something about them that tethers them to reality and they just can’t shake it. Maybe they perform out of their own experiences and are a bit more genuine in their acting. Life, however, isn’t supposed to be acting. Many people seem to think they need to put on a mask when they interact with people. But Jesus says that those who belong to His kingdom MUST live out what they are. He compares us to salt and light. And then He asks us to be what we are. The implication is that if we try to avoid the essential parts of what we are, we will miss out on all the PURPOSE that He has for us. So are we ready to be salty lights?
Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 in Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday. So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the Youth Room to pray together for God’s power in each of us. We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!

“You Lord keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light. With your help, I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall. As for God, His way is perfect; the Lord’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in Him.”

Unable to make it out for Wednesday nights? We are LIVE STREAMING our Thinking Out Loud series on Facebook! Watch and interact from your phone or computer live! We’ll also continue to post videos of the night to our YouTube channel, so you can catch up at anytime. Or, listen to our Podcast on iTunes.

We’re going to take Wednesday nights and talk through together as a church family some of the pressing cultural issues of today. We may disagree with one another, but we’ll have the discussion anyway. We’ll treat one another with respect and work towards understanding each other. And in the end, we’ll pray that the Lord will lead each one of us in our response to these issues. We want to have open hearts to God’s direction. And we want our church to be a place where we can discuss anything – even when we disagree – with the love we’re called to have for each other.
10/10 Immigration – What Should Christians Want?
How should Christians think, talk, and act in the current American immigration debate? Some think that being a Christ follower means we should honor the laws and expect / demand that others do the same. Others think it means that we welcome most if not all foreigners into our country with open arms. Is there a genuine Biblical answer here? And how can we be a part of the solution instead of feeding into the destructive discourse? Let’s put our hearts and minds together on this topic and see what our Lord teaches us.
